Daniel Lyght: August 2008 Archives
There weren't any major injuries in practice yesterday that I noticed -- no carts or crutches.
Wilson Ramos was favoring his right ankle and got it taped at least twice. He participated in all of practice though. We'll see if he's ready to go again today when the vets come out at 10:20 (they come out at 10:20 am and start practicing at 1040 am).
I was going to write that the freshmen group is already looking crisper -- but they've had three players false start in less than 10 plays run today.
Former Sanger running back Justin Webber is out playing (as he was yesterday) with no knee brace. It will be interesting to see how he does this fall.
Not too many fans out here but it's early. The crowd usually picks up a little when the vets come out.
Defensive lineman Porter Hill is walking around like he was yesteerday, but he hasn't suited up yet. His local paper said he's been reinstated. I'll check with him today.
The Bulldogs have taken the practice field at Fresno State.
The freshmen (with a sprinkling of older players) have taken the field first and the veterans will come out at about 10:40 a.m.
All practices will be open to fans until Aug. 10. After the scrimmage that day, practices will be closed.
Today's about learning for the inexperienced folk. From the players to the camera operators, to the equipment guys (my man Eddie hit the field running today. Most of the younger players didn't do that), the inexperienced guys are learning how practice will run as a Bulldog.
Pat Hill was the first to walk on the pristine grass this morning at 8:40 a.m. He raved about the condition of the field, and he was absolutely correct. The field is two tones of a beautiful green.
"You almost hate to mess it up," he said.
After participating in a scrimmage Friday, Damon Jenkins and the rest of the Cleveland Browns had the day off from practice Saturday in Berea, Ohio at Browns training camp.
Jenkins, a former starting corner for Fresno State, is attempting to make the Brown's 53-man regular season roster in his rookie season.
In this edition of "Welcome to the NFL," Jenkins and I talked about the difference between college training camp and pro training camp, differing strategies for covering receivers at the NFL level, going against talented receiver Braylon Edwards, playing under head coach Romeo Crennel and his 2 ½ year-old daughter Jaelyn. ...
What's different about training camp in college and NFL training camp?"
In college you start off with single days ... I was here for a week and a half and had 13 practices. We go double day, single day [alternating between two practices a day and one practice per day]. We're in pads all the time, not just shirts and helmets."
Fresno State's 2007 season and the expected return of nine offensive starters has national coaches confident in the Bulldogs' 2008 chances.
The USA TODAY Top 25 coaches' poll today ranked the Bulldogs 25th in its preseason poll.
The Bulldogs, who received 91 points, were ranked ahead of opening day foe Rutgers from the Big East conference.
No other Western Athletic Conference team is in the Top 25. Boise State received 25 points and stands at 34th place.
The Bulldogs are also ranked one spot ahead of Alabama, which received 83 points. So maybe Jim McElwain made a mistake in moving to the Crimson Tide?
The Georgia Bulldogs were ranked No. 1 after receiving 22 first-place votes. USC (14 first-place votes) is ranked second, Ohio State (14) is third, Oklahoma (3) is fourth and Florida (5) is fifth.

Clifton Smith, the former Fresno State football MVP and Edision high stud, is in training camp as an NFL rookie with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
Clifton is looking to catch on as a return specialist and running back. If he can recreate some of the same feats from high school and college against the world's top football talent, he'll have no problem sticking around.
You can find news about Clifton and his new experiences in NFL training camp here every week, so be sure to check back as Clifton answers questions from me. (See how former Bulldog starting DB Damon Jenkins is faring in Cleveland Browns camp every week as well) If you have questions for him, go ahead and comment and we'll try to get those questions to him as well.
So here's my Q&A with Clifton ... enjoy ....
