OK, Fresno State beat UCLA 36-31 on Saturday at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena. But, things didn't work out so well Sunday and Monday for the Bulldogs in the fantasy football matchup with the Bruins.
Now if Fresno State was matched up with Southern Mississippi, then Brett Favre almost single-handedly could've defeated alumni from Fresno State and UCLA. But it wasn't the Jets QB that did in the 'Dogs, it was the Jets defense and special teams.
Represented by former Bruins defensive end Kenyon Coleman, the J ... E ... T ... S ... Jets, Jets, Jets!!! scored 21 fantasy points against the Cardinals, despite giving up 35 points. Yes, the men in the N.Y. Titans retro jerseys scored four fumbles (8 points), three interceptions (6 points), five sacks (5 points) and a touchdown (good for another 6). That kind of negates the minus-4 points on the points allowed thing.
(MAN, THIS GAME WAS UGLY. GEE, THE JETS EVEN HAD A BLOCKED KICK, BUT THAT DOESN'T SCORE IN OUR CBS SPORTSLINE LEAGUE.)
Sure, Tony Romo playing QB as the person now representing former UCLA/Cowboys QB Troy Aikman did a number with 28.7 points, but it wouldn't have meant anything had the Jets D lifted off in a big way.
Aside from those two numbers, former UCLA players or people representative of did squat: Maurice Jones-Drew (4.9 points), DeShaun Foster (1.1), Drew Bennett (0), Matt Slater (0), Marcedes Lewis (0), Willie "Flipper" Anderson/Dane Looker (1.7) and Neil Rackers (3).
The combined UCLA output was 60.4, which as you see could've been a lot less without Aikman/Romo and those darn Jets.
OK, so going to Fresno State's team, which fared decent across the board but only put up 54.68 points.
Former Bulldogs/Ravens QB Trent Dilfer was represented by Joe Flacco, who put up a respectable 11.58 points against a tough Steelers D on Monday Night Football.
Lorenzo Neal got 0 points, but only had to go because Derrick Ward and the Giants had a bye (actually, so did Slater and the Patriots, but Slater doesn't have any points to speak of anyhow, so the bye didn't change a thing.) Michael Pittman didn't score a TD but he did get 8.1 points.
Receiver Bernard Berrian had 7.8 points but Adam Jennings had none. The dream Henry Ellard/Torry Holt combo had 6.5 points.
Bear Pascoe, had he been drafted by the Chiefs and taken in a quarter of the points of the aging Tony Gonzalez, scored 2.7 points. Richard Marshall and the Panthers D had 4 points, and Brett Visintainer/Nick Folk had 6 points.
Well, that's it for this exercise. We might try and do an all-comers roster of players Fresno State has faced in the Pat Hill "anytime, anywhere, anyday, anyway, anyhow, any any era."
And speaking of coaches, we guess Rick Neuheisel could use this as a recruiting tool, but it probably really wouldn't make any sense.
