Clifton Smith, the former Fresno State football MVP and Edision high stud, is in training camp as an NFL rookie with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
Clifton is looking to catch on as a return specialist and running back. If he can recreate some of the same feats from high school and college against the world's top football talent, he'll have no problem sticking around.
You can find news about Clifton and his new experiences in NFL training camp here every week, so be sure to check back as Clifton answers questions from me. (See how former Bulldog starting DB Damon Jenkins is faring in Cleveland Browns camp every week as well) If you have questions for him, go ahead and comment and we'll try to get those questions to him as well.
So here's my Q&A with Clifton ... enjoy ....
...
Where is training camp held?
We are in Orlando at the Walt Disney World Sports Complex
Where are you living? In team dorms?
We are staying in a hotel in Celebration, Fla. right outside of Orlando.
How does it compare to your college living situation?
The living situation is so much different. For one, in this profession you have a lot more money to go out and enjoy yourself when you want to and you get to stay in a nice house or a really nice condo. As compared to college [where] you really don't get that much money on scholarship so you really have to watch what you spend your money on. ... If you wanted to go out on a date or something you and your date better go Dutch because you really don't have the money to spend.
What types of rookie hazing have you gone through so far?
There is a law against hazing so we don't haze! But one of my teammates -- running back Mike Bennet the class clown -- got me with the water bottle trick already. We were on water break and I had my back turned to him when he asked me so I took the bottle ... not being aware that he unscrewed the top and it was a full bottle also. So I get ready to take a drink and all of a sudden the top of the bottle comes off and I was hit with the trick! I had water all up my nose and all down my jersey it was a funny trick but I bet i will get the last laugh I will get him back soon when he thinks I have forgoten about it.
What was the first day of camp like?
The first day of camp was everything I expected. Everything was moving at a real fast pace. I called my uncle the night before because I was somewhat nervous and really didn't know what to expect. So I talked to him for about 10 minutes and he helped me ease my nervous emotions.
Did organized team activities help get you acclimated before start of training camp?
Yea, I think OTA's really helped me because it gave me a chance to bond with the vets on the team and helped me learn the way they carry themselves at practice. It was a great time to really get to know a future Hall of Famer in Warrick Dunn and he has helped me a lot.
Biggest regret from first day of camp?
I have no regrets from the first day of camp.
What were you most proud of from your first day of camp?
I think the thing I was most proud of was taking advantage of every opportunity they gave me.
What aspect of the first day was most difficult?
I think the most difficult thing about the first day of camp was just getting used to the weather out here. I still believe that it is a lot hotter in Fresno during college camp than it is out here, but it is so humid out here to the point where you sweat as soon as you get outside.
What's it like being in an NFL training camp?
Being in an NFL training camp is so much work because now you are fighting for a position on the team because in this game anybody can be let go at any time, so it can be sometimes stressful. But then you have the times when you are around your teammates and it is so much fun just to be out there.
Why was playing in the NFL your dream?
Playing in the NFL was always a dream for me because growing up and watching my uncle Tim McDonald I just wanted to be just like him when I grew up. I also loved the game of football more than anyone I knew and I wouldn't be denied playing this game. I also never wanted to let my younger cousins TJ and Tevin McDonald and Billy Wright every see me fail at anything I do, so it's making them push harder to get where I am. This is everything I ever wished for and it's crazy because I can remember when I was that little kid on the other side of the fence wanting to get the players' autographs and just being at my uncle's practices on the field with the players. Now that I'm a grown man and I'm on the other side of the fence it is a blessing!
