Bruce Bowen's first love and more
Edison graduate and San Antonio Spurs small forward Bruce Bowen threw out the first pitch at Chukchansi Park on Thursday and said his first love was baseball ... not basketball.
Edison's poor baseball squad during his year's there helped push Bowen towards basketball -- to his benefit. If you include the 96-97 season in which he played in one game with the Miami Heat, Bowen just wrapped up his 13th season in the NBA.
He said he has two years left on his contract and is not planning on going anywhere, except perhaps to the NBA Finals ... again.
"Realistically we still have an opportunity for a couple more [rings]. That remains to be seen until we play," Bowen said.
Bowen also said when it's time for him to give up the game, there will be no flip flopping like Brett Favre and others have done.
"I don’t think Pop [Spurs coach Greg Popovich] would allow that. [He'd say] 'Look, you done? Or what? Let me know,'" Bowen said with a smile. "It's hard when that's been your life for so long ... I've been fortunate enough to utilize this [sport] and have it where it's allowed me this life I have and I appreciate basketball for that but it wasn’t my complete life. I know there's other things."
Other things like he and his wife's retail property, salon, spa, boutique and programs like the basketball camp which he's run in Fresno for the last seven years.
Bowen said he's trying to use the voice he has to make a positive impact.
He stresses that youths read more, use sports to a means (for instance, to gain an education and see the world), and be more active physically to avoid childhood obesity.
"They're trying to take away recess because they think if we keep kids in the classroom more they'll learn more," he said. "No. [Kids] need to exert some of that energy that [they] have built up, especially us boys. ... They need to get out and exercise."
