Rob Lowery commits elsewhere. Here's what we thought ...

Rob Lowery, a point guard Fresno state was recruiting, signed a letter of intent to play at the University of Dayton, according to the Dayton Daily News . Lowery, who knows Eddie Miller and plays at the same JuCo Miller used to (Cecil College), could have hopped to Fresno and received (probably) significant minutes. Here's a conversation Gary Estwick and I had after finding out about Lowery. We discuss Lowery, the team and a lot of other things ...

Daniel: Just found out Rob Lowery signed to play at University of Dayton ... What’s up with that? Why would you want to play at Dayton?

Gary: Well it’s closer to home [from Maryland]. And Dayton is closer to Cincinnati than Fresno is to LA or the Bay area…

Daniel: True. [The family] can drive from Md. to Ohio. But still.

Gary: Guess Eddie Miller couldn’t convince his buddy Rob to follow in his footsteps; they played at the same junior college. Eddie has enjoyed his time in Fresno, and by all accounts, Rob liked the place when he visited during the basketball season.

Daniel: Well I just looked up their record ... they went 23-11 last year ... Fresno State can't say much about that.

G: How many guys do they have back?

D: I have no idea.

G: Even though Fresno State struggled last year, they have a lot of potential for next year, although Rob was not coming in here to neccesarily be No. 1. The coaches feel really good about Reggie Moore. Rob was gonna play stop gap. He was gonna compete for the No. 1 spot (at point guard) or play 2-guard. Even then he was gonna share time with Dwight O’Neil, who’s gonna move to the 2 from the 3 to make time for Paul George. What Cleveland wanted was competition at every position. I’m sure Rob looked at that and was saying I’m going to share a lot of time with a freshman, who they’re really high on, and a senior, who’s the heart of the team even if he’s not the best player.

D: I’m having a hard time believing Dwight can play the 2 guard.

G: When they say Dwight can play the 2, you have to take [into account] minus the twinkies for the rest of the summer.

D: So you’re saying he’s gonna lose some weight?

G: If he’s gonna play 2-guard he’s gonna lose weight. If he’s gonna play 3 he’s gonna lose weight. I saw him last week on campus while the team was doing offseason workouts. The good thing about Dwight is he can shed weight fast. The bad thing is he can shed weight fast, and he says “I can knock it out fast." It’s not the healthiest thing. If you never put that weight on, you can be stronger. It’s better than going up and down as he has, though the wrist injury didn’t help him. He coulda cut back on the Lil’ Debbies while he was rehabbing his wrist.
Rob not signing increased Dwight’s role because unless you sign another scholarship player, Dwight increases his playing time at backup point guard, something he did last season. But that again depends on what kind of shape he comes in.

D: And whether or not he can handle the ball with his right hand ...

G: No doubt about that ... We attributed a lot of that to the injury that didn’t seem completely healed. There was a point in time when it wasn’t healed and he was still playing on it. If you had to decide between living two years in Fresno or two years in Dayton where would you go?

D: I have no idea ... what’s in Dayton?

G: What’s in Fresno?

D: (laughs) I still don’t know. I have a good church, though.

G: I love WinCo foods. I really do. I love WinCo.

D: I’m mad the biggest attraction in Fresno is WinCo.

G: I’m trying to think of something else but it’s taking a second ... Blackbeards!

D: What the heck is that?

G: That’s the place where you can play miniature golf, batting cages, arcade ... all the stuff I couldn’t afford to do when I was a kid, now I can afford it. I just look out of place when I do it.

D: You fit the size requirement.

G: You’re just mad I’m better at Ms. Pac Man than you.

D: Yeah, ok ... who else is Fresno State trying to get?

G: JeJuan Brown was another one of their targets — a power forward who would help fill in the gap that came when they came to terms to part ways with Joey Cameron. According to his hometown paper in Biloxi, Mississippi, [Brown] is going to Arkansas State. It woulda been cool to have a southern guy on the bench, someone who can understand my accent. Someone who can appreciate a fried oyster po’boy.

D: That’s foul. Who eats oysters like that?

G: Anyone back home. Anyone with taste. Fried shrimp is the top option but oysters are up there. Hot sausage po’boy is up there.

D: I can see that.

G: Have you ever had fried oysters? They’re good.

D: Getting back ...

G: They're still looking at Robin Benzing but it looks like Nicola Kecman is gonna be a long shot. Kentucky, Ole Miss and Ohio State are looking at him. It’ll be interesting to see how they recover from the past 7 days. Even if the Bulldogs were to get Benzing, it’s a good chance he’ll have to sit out a season and only have three years remaining because he’d be coming in as an international prospect because he plays for a club team with professionals.

D: I thought that made him ineligible?

G: Eligibility would not be locked in. They have to determine how much time should he sit out: a few games? Season? Possibly more? There are eligibility questions when you get a guy who’s played on a club team initially. Fresno State has to sign him. Then they have to say “are we willing to not have this guy play for us for a full 4 years?” Cleveland had hoped to fill some slots in the roster with quality in-state walk-ons. As it turns out, he might have to search a lil’ harder for some scholarship players. He’s still waiting to learn how many scholarships they’ll lose because of their APR score. ...
You’re a DC/MD/VA type of guy. What are the pros and cons for moving across the country like you have?

D: Well the obvious con is family. That’s huge for a college kid, I guess. For me as well to a degree.

G: Would you consider Dayton as driving distance?

D: If it’s a day’s drive, it’s drivable. (Dayton is nine hours from Cecil County, Maryland) But I used to drive to Minnesota growing up.

G: Central Florida was also in the running for a long time [with Lowery]. It looked like it would come down to the Bulldogs and UCF, but Dayton came in late. He just visited Dayton.

D: Personally, I woulda gone to UCF.

G: The weather.

D: I was thinking the girls. ... I should probably back off though. I do have a girlfriend.

G: You probably should.

Come on, ya'll -- there's way cooler stuff to do in Fresno than Blackbeard's.

Maybe he chose Dayton because he wanted to play for a winning program. Or maybe he wanted to play in the best non-BCS conference in the country. Or maybe he wanted to play in front of the most loyal fans in the country. Or maybe he wanted to play for a school with state-of-the-art facilities. Is there really a comparison here? The fact that "Dayton came in late" and he chose them over Fresno shows how much more Dayton has to offer. Dayton is light years ahead of Fresno in terms of being significant in the basketball world. Have fun being a mid-major in your mid-major conference.

If you are wondering why Rob Lowery would choose Dayton over Fresno St., I can give you multiple reasons. Let's start with a 23-11 record, top 30 RPI and a quarterfinal NIT appearance this past year. A top tier facility that has hosted the 3rd most NCAA tournament games in history and hosts the play in game every year. An average attendance of over 12,000 per game--consistently in the top 25 of all NCAA programs...
Just thought you'd like to know, maybe a little knowledge and research in the future
