Bulldogs' Clifton Smith to Tampa, Jenkins to Cleveland

Fresno State MVP Clifton Smith will fly to Tampa Bay on Thursday and will sign a free agent contract for the weekend with the Buccaneers.

If all goes well, he'll be able to sign a longer deal.

Damon Jenkins, a starter at cornerback, will do the same with the Clelevand Browns.

Smith got the news from agent Jason Dillard on Tuesday afternoon before heading to class -- I can't imagine he made it on time.

"As soon as I got the phone call, I was jumping on my bed, clicking my heels, I was so happy," Smith said. "This is all I ever dreamed for as a kid growing up, so now that my dream's come true, I just have to make the most of it."

Dillard said if Smith performs well, the Bucs said they'll sign him on the spot, but declined to give details of a possible contract.

"They're excited about him," Dillard said. "They know his prowess as a returner. The Bucs have been known to struggle in the return game, so they're looking forward to having him out there, seeing the same flash he's provided all throgh his college career."
