... He committed to Fresno State days before coach Ray Lopes resigned for committing recruiting violations in March 2005.
Before Lopes' resignation, Simpson told The Bee:
“
"Fresno State is a place where I feel I can contribute immediately. The coaches, they were themselves. They didn't try to put up a front. And I'll tell you that I do like that arena [the Save Mart Center]. That's like the best one I've seen."
He chose the Bulldogs over USC and Oklahoma State.
Less than one month later, Simpson decommitted and had little problem finding a replacement school, and landed at Saint Mary’s. Center James Tchana, who was in the same recruiting class, stayed with Fresno State.
He is now averaging 12.1 points and 9.4 rebounds for Saint Mary’s which plays Fresno State tonight at the Save Mart Center.
Funny how things work out... If Simpson stayed at Fresno State, would the Bulldogs have landed Quinton Hosley and/or Dominic McGuire? Would Simpson have helped Fresno State win another four games last season, including the WAC Tournament?
At 6 feet, 7 inches, and athletic, will coach Steve Cleveland draw another player of that caliber in the coming months?
