Martin, CE hoops and more Selma Bears

Thoughts of the day:

** Why not Marty Martin to Immanuel, where Bill Szpor resigned? Martin, the fired Clovis West coach, would have difficulty selling his house, because it was purchased a year ago -- and we all know what's happened to the real estate market since then. So, what the heck, keep your crib and take over what's a very good job a short commute away in Reedley.

** Expect Clovis East boys basketball to take off now. The Timberwolves, defendng D-I champs, are only 12-10 after playing a grueling schedule that counted their first 18 games on the road. Fifth-ranked Buchanan is in trouble tonight at No. 3 CE.

** Don't forget the little guys: Big Central Sequoia League boys game tonight with Immanuel (13-5) -- top-ranked in D-V -- going to Selma, which is 16-2 and unranked, though the Bears think they should be.

My son is a current CW football player. He informed me that a rather large petition has been circulating at CW asking the District to re-instate Coach Martin. The signers, I’ve been told, are the players; frosh, jv & returning varsity players. Does their opinion matter?

In the stands this year, I heard rumors upon rumors that certain parents were placing pressure on the powers to be to oust Martin. I hate to think that these few parents were a factor in the District's decision.

Personally, I feel Coach Martin is a positive role model for the players and a good coach. He needs time to implement his program, his way. You can't blame him for injuries, suspensions, and the lack of depth in certain key positions (i.e. wide receiver and corners) which led to CW's less than perfect season.

Oh yeah, don’t forget CW lost to the California state runner-up by seven points, on their field, and lost the Valley Championship on Bakersfield’s home field by three points(forgive me if the points are not accurate).

All this was accomplished by a Coach who attempted to ease the transition of his late hiring by keeping the current offensive implemented by Coach Hartigan. He hit the floor running and did a great job under the circumstances!

I for one hope Coach Martin is re-instated. And I know I'm not alone.

CW Parent

I dont understand the decision made by the CUSD and their parents. Since when did the parents run the district and the coaching decisions? When Walberg was using illegal players to win championships he was applauded ,but once it was discovered they(the parents) didnt speak up about his ousting. Whos best interest are the parents looking after?? Certainly not their kids, because they would want stability and a good role model and someone who shows excellent examples of what to do with with world when you are given lemons...Coach Martin made lemonade, given the timing of his hiring and the struggles his team faced this year to ecel and come together and have the season they did is in my book Coach of the Year status.
