Earlier today, Reno was awarded the WAC Basketball Tournament for 2009 and 2010. Nevada will be the host to the event, which will be held at the Lawlor Events Center.
This spring, New Mexico State will host the final of its back-to-back WAC tournaments in Las Cruces.
If you're not a fan of gambling, you may not like Reno. But if you don't like drinking beer at a bowling alley on a Tuesday night -- one of the few places open -- you may not like the area around NMS either.
The WAC needs a host city with a 1) good airport (cheap and easy to travel to, which eliminates Fresno), 2) a site with 2-3 hours reach of several WAC schools (helps attendence) and 3) a place with tourist attractions.
Bay area? Salt Lake City? Los Angeles? Seattle? Denver? Dallas or New Orleans? (Hey, I had to throw that in there for the folks at La. Tech.)

Thank God the WAC did not choose to have Las Cruces host the WAC Men's Basketball Tournament again! Las Cruces has no airport and is by far the worst place in the history of the WAC to host the Men's Basketball Tournament! If the WAC Board of Directors are smart, they will never put the Men's Basketball Tournament back in Las Cruces again! Reno makes more sense! Smart choice by the WAC Board of Directors this time! Unfortunately we have to put up with an upcoming season of the tournament being in the terrible choice of Las Cruces first............of Dear God NO!!!!!!!
The pan am is the best place to hold the tourney dont be jealous because we are better than you. You must be a racist and not like mexicans if you dont want to come to the rich cultures that make up las cruces. If so you can just kiss my guns. By the way we have a spaceport which is better than a airport. GO AGGIES! We got the guns so keep howling wolfpack.
Las Cruces is just too far and very difficult for fans to travel to, sorry Mr. Aggie fan but that's just the way it is. And I don't consider the Pan Am as the best place to hold the tourney. Reno will draw a bigger crowd because of the attractions than Las Cruces, and it's closer for most fans of WAC teams to travel. There have been a lot of complaints from fans about the tourney being in Las Cruces due to the lack of airport and having to travel more miles on the road to get there. Because of that, the chances of Las Cruces ever hosting the tourney again are slim. For now Reno is the best choice and perhaps Salt Lake City will host it next.
