After Fresno State's game against Texas A&M last week, Aggies linebacker Mark Dodge, an army veteran, called the triple-overtime game "a hard-fought war."
"They came to play that second half," he said. "We were a little slow in reacting, and we just had to fight and fight. Luckily, it turned out for us."
When is it OK to compare sports to war or use sports terminology that refers to war? Is it insensitive to vets? Are vets too sensitive? Does it depend on who's saying it?
Kevin Garnett apologized after using war references while gearing up for a Game 7 during the 2004 Western Conference playoffs.
Garnett said, "This is for game 7. This is it. It's for all the marbles. I'm sitting in the house, I'm loading up the pump, I'm loading up the Uzi, I've got a couple of M-16s, a couple nines, I got a couple of joints with some silencers on them. I'm just loading up clips, couple of grenades, I got a missile launcher with a couple of missiles. I'm ready for war."
Cleveland Browns tight end Kellen Winslow also apologized after his infamous "I'm a f*%$#@! soldier" comments.
Said Winslow: "Yeah, I don't give a hell. It's about this U, man. I don't give a flyin' you-know-what about a Vol. I don't give a damn! He would do the same thing to me. It's war. They don't give a freakin' you-know-what about you. They will kill you. They're out there to kill you. So I'mma kill him. You write that in the paper. You write that. You make money off that. No, man, I'm pissed. All y'all take this down. I'm pissed, man. We don't care about nobody except this U. We don't. If I didn't hurt him, he'd hurt me. They were gunnin' for my legs. I'm a come right back at 'em. I'm a [expletive] soldier!"
Winslow's comments also have to go down as one of the top postgame rants.
