Clovis coach feeling heat
The water's beginning to boil at Clovis High, where the Cougars are 0-2 and have been outscored 94-25 under first-year coach Jerry Campbell.
Campbell, you might remember, came from Texas, where he went 1-9 last year at Victoria Memorial. He was 28-43 in seven seasons as a high school head coach before being hired at Clovis.
The assignment buckled a lot of knees in and around the Cougars' program, which last had a losing record in 1973.
Clovis athletic director Dave Bens responded by saying: "We're betting on the man, not the record."
Early results suggest it was a shaky wager.

I had the opportunity to watch Clovis play and they looked horrible. Not sure where they found this coach but it is time for him to leave town. It's beyond embarrassment.

I personally think if this man does not turn it around quickly, he is going to be shown the door.
For Clovis High to start off like this, it is totally not acceptable.

What happened to Clovis High School. Did they really hire this man who has never posted a winning record in all his yeas of coaching? "Betting on the man" is one thing, but please do it with a little common sense and opened eyes.
Just a couple of quotes from the program purchased at the Bellarmine game.
Principle Pam Winter states "Coach Campbell and his entire coaching staff have been working all summer with the Varsity, Junior Varsity, Freshmen, Clark, and elementry teams. He has really created a fully articulated program". "We are looking forward to a long season that progresses very deep into the playoffs". Athletic Director David Bens says "The 2007 team will have an exciting offense and our defense will be rock solid!".
Coach Campbell must be great in interviews. He would probably be able to sell me a set of sunlamps if I lived in Phoenix. Maybe I am judging him too early. I'll hold my piece another 7 years and see what the elementary schools will bring to Cougar football with his guidence, or....could it be that the soul of Cougar football has moved up north a few miles.

How can this school and /or district be so stupid to have even thought about hiring this coach? His record says it all and now look at the football games "HELLO the proof is in the pudding"

I may have been too critical of coach Campbell. I'm sure he is good at many things, but winning football games is obviously not one of them. I agree with Ms. Brown that the blame should fall on the school for choosing him as their coach, specifically A.D. Dave Bens and principle Pam Winter. Their assessment skills leave a lot to be desired. So what's in the future for this once proud program? Will he ever be able to pull out a 8-2 season and a possible title? A 7 year 28-43 record should answer that question. Dave Bens stated after the hireing of coach Campbell "I hope people take us lightly, I really do". Well Mr. Bens you were so convinced of your great decision that you went out on a limb and made some bold statements. It looks like the limb snapped.

Look, Coach Campbell, first of all came to Clovis High in late April, not knowing anybodys abilities, or strength, or anything about the program. He had four returning varsity starters, a load of juniors, and a few sophmores on varsity. Did not have an option type team, nor did he have a very experienced team.
Coach was left a team of kids who didnt care about football, for the most part, who were weak, for the most part, and a team that had to battle through tough losses due to injury.
What happened last year will never happen again as long as coach campbell is here. We have been training nonstop since the monday after clovis west, and we aren't stoping. We are going to bring back the pride and tradition of Clovis High school, you can count on that
"HECK YEAH!!!"
