Three former Fresno State football players have signed as undrafted free agents with NFL teams and two more could sign by the end of the week.

Fullback Roshon Vercher signed with the Arizona Cardinals, receiver Joe Fernandez with the Seattle Seahawks and defensive lineman Louis Leonard with the San Diego Chargers.

Safety Josh Sherley said he received an offer sheet from Seattle, too, but has yet to sign. Offensive lineman Kyle Young has received a tryout with the Washington Redskins and will attend their three-day minicamp, which starts Thursday.

Fresno had four players drafted this weekend during the two-day, seven-round draft. Cornerback Marcus McCauley went to the Minnesota Vikings and receiver Paul Williams to the Tennessee Titans, both in the third round. Running back Dwayne Wright was taken by the Buffalo Bills in the fourth round, and offensive lineman Chris Denman went to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the seventh round.

Fresno State beat Louisiana Tech 4-0 and 8-0 Saturday at Bulldog Diamond to complete a three-game sweep.
But just as the Bulldogs were taking the field for the second game, Hawaii finished its own sweep of Utah State to lock up the Western Athletic Conference regular-season title for the second time in five years.
The Rainbow Wahine finished WAC 16-2, while Fresno State is 12-3 with a three-game set left against San Jose State this week at Bulldog Diamond.
Fresno State (39-16) outscored Louisiana Tech 21-1, as pitchers Robin Mackin and Merryann Barr combined for 16 consecutive scoreless innings to end the series.
Barr (10-7) pitched a two-hitter and drove in three runs in Saturday's second game. She went 5 for 7 with five RBIs in the series.
Mackin (29-9) threw a seven-hitter with seven strikeouts in the first game. She also hit a two-run double in a three-run sixth.
Senior catcher Nichole Willis hit a two-run homer in the second game. It was her seventh and the only homer by either team in the series.

Okay, I know there are a lot of Raiders fans in the area. Who do you prefer they select with the No. 1 pick in the draft and why?

The Fresno Grizzlies' 2:05 p.m. start against the Tucson Sidewinders has been rained out.

They'll play a double-header Monday, beginning at 6:05 p.m. Both games will be seven innings.

Fans can exchange Sunday's tickets for any future game except the Fourth of July.

NHRA dragster champion Gary Scelzi is stepping away from the sport after this season, but left wiggle room for a return to racing on a limited basis.

"At the end of this year, I'll be leaving Don Schumacher Racing," the 46-year-old Fresnan said Tuesday during a teleconference.

In the next breath he quickly stated, "It is not a retirement. I'm not quitting drag racing. I'm leaving it open."

Scelzi, a four-time NHRA champion, said "family" was his reason for leaving drag racing. He wants to spend more time with wife Julianne and sons Dominic, 9, and Giovanni, 5, and help brothers Mike and Jim with the family business, Scelzi Enterprises, a custom truck builder.

Fresno State men's basketball coach Steve Cleveland announced the hiring of two assistant coaches to replace the departed Heath Schroyer and Fred Langley.

Jeff Reinert was hired as associate head coach and Lee Moon as the third assistant. Also, former third assistant Senque Carey was promoted to second assistant.

Reinert comes to Fresno State from Oregon State, where he spent the past five seasons as the lead assistant under head coach Jay John.

Moon returns to Fresno State after serving as an assistant coach at Morehead State last season. Moon was Fresno State's video coordinator for the 2005-06 season.

Four-time NHRA champion Gary Scelzi of Fresno will make an announcement on his future in drag racing Tuesday during a teleconference call.
Scelzi signed a three-year contract with his sponsors, Mopar and Oakley, that requires him to declare this spring whether he'll drive in the 2008 National Hot Rod Association series.
Scelzi declined to reveal his intentions to The Bee on Monday, saying it wouldn't be fair to his sponsors to let the news out early.
In 2005, Scelzi won the Funny Car championship to go with his three Top Fuel titles.
Last year he finished seventh and currently sits in fifth place.

Fresno State's game against Hawaii was postponed by rain Saturday at Beiden Field.
The teams will conclude the three-game Western Athletic Conference series with a doubleheader today. First pitch is at noon.
Hawaii won the series opener 9-8 on Friday.
Fresno State (21-19) and Hawaii (25-13) are tied at 6-4 in second place. Louisiana Tech, which was rained out Saturday at Sacramento State, leads with a 7-3 record and plays a doubleheader today.
Bulldogs coach Mike Batesole said his pitching rotation should remain pat. Sophomore left-hander Justin Wilson and sophomore right-hander Tanner Scheppers are scheduled to pitch.

Remember those ads that told every kid in America that milk "does a body good"?

(Who was the model in the ad by the way?)

Well, Bulldogs strength and conditioning coach Andy Bennett said Friday that was true ... and that the Bulldogs have benefitted greatly from it.

Let's take a look at my fantasy baseball lineup, and then we can discuss how my second pick in the draft already has an enflamed body part.

I haven't played fantasy baseball in several years, mostly because it takes far more energy than I have, and I usually stop checking my lineup after May 15 or so. But this year I'm back, joining 13 other teams in a work-related league that is not for money. I repeat. Not. For. Money.

Mia, one of our blog readers, shared an Don Imus column from Joe Leonardi... I agree with a lot Leonardi had to say -- firing Imus had more to do with losing sponsors than righting a wrong. But he was wrong when he said society needs to get over being offended by words.

The NFL has revised its player conduct policy and I believe it is a great move. Do you agree with the league's decision to suspend Adam "Pacman" Jones and Chris Henry, and the fact that they must earn the right to be reinstated by adhering to certain conditions?

Don Imus deserves to be fired, both for what he said and the message he represents.

If this shock jock can go on air to a nationally-televised audience and call the Rutgers women's basketball team "nappy-headed hos" imagine what he and some listeners say about blacks in their living rooms. And what's said in living rooms evenutally moves to the board room where racism may not be spoken, but it thrives...

Senior Jennifer Davis limited Fresno State to two hits and struck out 14, and the UC-Santa Barbara shocked the No. 24 Bulldogs 1-0 in eight innings Tuesday at Bulldog Diamond.
The scheduled doubleheader was shortened to one game because UCSB's bus was delayed by traffic problems.
Fresno State came into this game on a tear; .399 batting average with 18 homers over the previous 13 games.
Davis was given a liberal strike zone and used it to her advantage. She consistently kept her pitches on the outside corner and had the Bulldogs chasing them all night.
Fresno State's only hits were Haley Perkins' lead-off single in the first inning and Nichole Willis' two-out double in the seventh.
Robin Mackin (24-7) allowed six hits and struck out six. She had a nine-game winning streak snapped.
UCSB scored in the top of the eighth on Tisha Duran's one out single, followed by Tiffany Wright's triple to right center.
The Bulldogs (32-14) embark on a three-game Western Athletic Conference series at New Mexico State starting on Friday. Then continue on the road next week with a series at first-place Hawaii.
Hawaii leads the WAC with an 11-1 record, Fresno State is 5-1 and New Mexico State is tied for third at 3-6 with San Jose State, Louisiana Tech and Nevada.

What will be the biggest story in Major League Baseball in 2007? Bonds and the home run record, more steroid issues?
