More on The McGuire Project

If Dominic McGuire can score anywhere on the court, Fresno State coach Steve Cleveland will let him. If McGuire can set up teammates and play solid defense, Cleveland will let him. If McGuire wants to drive the team bus, carry the Bulldogs' duffel bags, order lunch, Cleveland might say yes. But here's what will decide how successful this do-it-all player is:

If and when he struggles to complete one of his many tasks, the coaching staff recognizes it and adjusts.

His multiple roles, which I wrote about in Tuesday's Fresno Bee, should be recorded with a pencil with a huge eraser, just in case he can't handle the job -- maybe it's a bad game performance, which happens, or the opponent's game plan is too tough to beat.

There has to be other players ready to step up, ready to not just score, but get the offense moving, penetrate to create shots for teammates, front in the post without fouling and many of the other knick knacks McGuire has put on his To-Do list this season.

When he isn't able to complete every task, he shouldn't be the fall guy.

If he doesn't showcase his do-everything-the-right-way nature in the first few games, fans must realize he's still a Division I transfer. He hasn't played in a college basketball game in nearly one year. And it's much easier to play superstar during non-conference action.

WAC action won't be nearly as easy. There's too much at stake.
