So everyone seems to think Adrian Wiggins needs to start searching the classifieds for work. He's the Fresno State women's basketball coach. Correction: Fresno State interim coach.
And no one thinks he's coming back. I mean, no one. Coaches. Writers. Fans. The woman who served me lunch in the company cafeteria this week. (No lie.)
A few weeks ago, the Bulldogs wore tape around their legs in support of Wiggins, letting everyone know they like him and they want the athletic department to bring him back.
They probably should have opted for the let's-win-a-few-more-games strategy, instead of tanking in their first game at the WAC Tournament to a No. 7 seed, but we'll see how their method works out.
It doesn't look good.
I don't say this because I have some inside information, but because of what Thomas Boeh, the athletic director, isn't saying. Wiggins just went 22-7 and his players really like him, and you couldn't wrestle a compliment for him out of Boeh.
Let's just say the vibe isn't good.
You'd swear that if Wiggins saved a child from running into traffic, the athletic department would release a statement that said, "Someone else probably would have done it if he hadn't, and we're not happy about the stain on little Timmy's jacket."
It's like a relationship where one person wants to dump the other, but they just haven't gotten around to it yet. And in the meantime, they don't want to say anything too nice, so the person doesn't feel led-on when the bomb drops.
It's like everyone's waiting for Fresno State to say, "Sorry Adrian, but you had to have seen this coming."
Or maybe they're worried about leading on fans, getting their hopes up that Wiggins is coming back when the truth is, they could find someone better. Let's be honest, as good a season as the Bulldogs had, and as nice a guy as Wiggins seems to be, Fresno State played a terrible schedule. Maybe anyone would have coached them to 22-7 and an early WAC exit.
I wouldn't be thinking about this so much if everyone wasn't talking about it. I blame you.
