Now the vote counting gets serious in the mayor's race

Perea.jpgAshley.jpgWe saw the results of the early voters about 8:15 p.m., which accounted for about 11% of the countywide vote. The latest results were posted a few minutes ago, and now the pattern is beginning to be set in the Fresno mayor's race.

In that contest, Ashley Swearengin and Henry T. Perea have just about nailed down their spots in the November runoff. They are in a virtual dead heat, with 22% of the precincts reporting. Swearengin has 26.6% of the vote and Perea has 26.58%. The next closest candidate is Jerry Duncan with 11.8%

It was always a Swearengin/Perea race for mayor, and the other candidates did nothing during the long campaign to break into the top two. The leaders had the most money and the better-run campaigns. It will be an interesting runoff campaign.

Perea was hurt toward the end of the campaign, getting a constant pounding from the conservative Lincoln Club. For the most part, Swearengin escaped criticism and was able to concentrate of her positive message of change. She won’t have that luxury in the runoff.
