'Armenian genocide' still not in U.S. vocabulary

A new nominee for the post of American ambassador to Armenia, Mary Yovanovitch, faces a Senate confirmation hearing today, but she won't be making any direct reference to the Armenian genocide. That's in line with the longstanding policy of the State Department and several administrations to give Turkey a rhetorical pass on recognition of the crimes that took the lives of 1.5 Armenian men, women and children nearly a century ago.

For many years we have joined with Armenian Americans, many foreign governments and people who care about an honest accounting of history in criticizing the U.S. reticence, and we did so again today in this editorial.

American officials have been reluctant to upset the Turks owing to that nation's strategic value as an ally. But that kind of realpolitik doesn't wash with the survivors of the genocide, nor should it. Acknowledging the past is the best way for Turkey to move forward, especially with its quest for membership in the European Union, which is stymied in large part because of Turkey's failure to own up to its own history.

This is the second day of this topic, but there still is no response.
As for Turkey having problems with its quest for European Union membership, according to my information, it is not because Turkey won't admit the persecution of the Aermenian nation, but Turkey refuses to abolish capital punishment. And less PR stuff, but money
stuff, Turkey is a very poor country and the EU sees little gain in admitting Turkey. I read European Newspapers on the internet. It seems that US opinion differs from the Eu's. But so, the US taxpayer would not be stuck to schlepp Turkey on their backs. Though US taxpayers pay already plenty for the US military bases and US rights to use Tuerkish space to get to certain other countries in the Middle East.
And for Turkey to open the door to law suits for reparations? Well, Turkey is poor, backward, fanatically islamic, punitive but not stupid.
Germany is paying plenty to Isreal. Maybe Turkish government does not want to pay to the Armenian nation in Armenia as well the Armenians in the United States.

Hi Isabell,

One of your points that Turkey is "poor" is not correct they are by many standards not charactorized as a "poor" country.

I would say they are fanatic but more from a nationalistic perspective, rather then Islamic fanatics.

I'll add more later, got to go...

Perhaps Turkey isn't poor.
But her people must be because Western Europe is being flooded with Turkish unskilled "Guest Workers."

I must have misunderstood that the secular Turkish government is under attack from the Islamic clerics. Isn't it fashionable in today's Muslim world (like the Christianizing of yore.) As per info: 85% of the Turkish population speaks Turkish; 98% are Muslims.

Perhaps I am labouring under the misconception that most of the persecution of Armenians was religious, but was nationalistic in the war of
1918-1922 when the Armenians sympathized with the Russians while Turkey was on the side of Germany
who was at war with Russia.

It seems that God's Crown of Creation (man) has always been preoccupied with genocide. I am sure that something from the Bible could be quoted to justify it. I know that the Sermon on the Mount could not.

I don't think the US has the genocide of Native Americans in its vocabulary in capital letters. And what goes on in Armenia, the former Soviet Republic, seems not to be quite kosher either.

Like the German Holocaust,
the Armenian Genocide must not be forgotten. But having shared the living space with Armenians for over 50 years, I have never heard a word of praise or gratitude for the Norwegian super-mega-humanitarian Fridtjof Nansen and his nearly legendary recue work.

Hi Isabella,

The National and Religous in Turkey is at odds but it seems like it's more political with the Nationals controlling the military (in my view).

During the Armenian genocide religion was used as a tool to rally the people against Armenians.

Another misperception is the Muslum Countries of today such as Syria, Iran, Iraq, Lebanan they opened there borders and welcomed Armenians in time of despiration and death. Armenians were allowed to practice the Christian religion.

Even some Turks helped save Armenians durring the genocide although small in number, maybe because they risked death themselves. That is something many Armenians do not mention.

The Turkish Government is still oppressive against it's people Kurds, Armenians, other ethnic minorities and ethnic Turks.

I would say the educated would know more of the humanitarian work done at the time of the Armenian genocide.

Some of my Cousins are Catholic because of the missions in the middle east that took in Armenian orphans(which were located in Muslum Countries).

It's a very un-focused writer who uses digressing to derail another writer's argumentation, instead of countering with facts. The focused writer would find it exasperating to separate the added up apples and oranges, because it contributes nothing to what is on the table.
Pax vobiscum my friend.

Hi Isabela,

I hope you did not feel as if I was making arguments or countering your posts.

I could back-up my posts with facts but it is time consuming. I would have to go back into my history books.

When I wrote in my previous post: "I would say the educated would know more of the humanitarian work done at the time of the Armenian genocide."

It was not directed against you, but more-so Armenians as well who believe they know about the history, but would further be enlightened to know how other countries and organizations tried and did help during the genocide.

All these posts are seen as "opinion" anyway rather then scholarly arguments. I would be more focused on my content possibly if I was paid the big bucks like Russ Minick, or Jim Boren.
