Legislature should censure Don Perata and then tell him to leave
The longer that Senate Pro Tem Don Perata hangs around the Capitol, the bigger the stench that comes from that glorious old building. Now we learn that Perata was just kidding about the recall of Sen. Jeff Denham, R-Atwater. One big joke. He was only showing his sense of humor when he paid signature gatherers to put the recall on the June 3 ballot. What about the hundreds of thousands of dollars that Perata and his cronies have already spent on the phony recall?
Perata announced Wednesday that he was ending the recall because that will help "stop the long, slow slide into another long stalemate" on the budget. Gee, senator. Do you think you had anything to do with this mess? Don Perata is an embarrassment to the Legislature and he ought to be censured by the Assembly and Senate. Do our lawmakers have the guts to do the right thing?
Fortunately, Perata's termed out. But he should go now. I'm stunned that Democratic senators aren't shunning their outgoing leader. This is a legislator who has given all of them a bad name. In the Valley, Sen. Dean Florez, D-Shafter, should be holding a news conference to ask for Perata's resignation. It's time for Florez to put some distance between him and Perata.
The recall was an abuse of the process, and never should have been launched in the first place. The abrupt ending of the recall campaign shows that Perata never intended to do the right thing. This was a bullying tactic by Perata that backfired.
Perata told this to the Sacramento Bee: "In the spirit of putting politics aside to solve problems -- I'm ending the recall campaign," Perata said, adding that "there was no deal, no quid pro quo" to abandoning the recall.
Well, I have a deal for the senator. Resign now, and you get to leave the Legislature without embarrassing yourself anymore than you already have. That's a great deal for the senator and an even better deal for the people of California.

I see that Sen. Florez has found the time to call for Dr. Welty's head again. I guess he finds it easier to bully someone who can't retaliate than to take on his own party leader. Whatever mismanagement Welty is guilty of is pocket change compared to the mismanagement of the state budget by the Governor and Legislature. But I guess accountability is selective to him.

Gee--how about the recall of Gray Davis? Shouldn't Schwartz resign? Or, the attempted recall of Machado (and successful of two other Republicans--Horcher and Allen) in 1995.
The obvious point is that Boren is a Republican and recalls are the privilege of Republicans and Democrats have no right to do it.
Boren would fit right in in the post-bellum South, informing blacks that the rights of whites don't apply to blacks.

Hey Boren! This is right next to the link on the "Flush" report.
Former Governor's Pete Wilson and George Deukmejian pen a column with disgraced, recalled former Governor Gray Davis.
Gee--what was Gray Davis accused of that Denham wasn't?

Pubicus...must not be even remotely informed to speculate Jimbo is of the conservative bent and not know the difference between the two recall efforts. I say "Recalls for Anyone for any Reason"...why waste time on getting anything done.
