Democrats in the Legislature have put together a package of eight bills to deal with autism and autism-related disorders. These bills came from public hearings throughout California held by a blue-ribbon commission on autism. Autism spectrum disorder affects one in every 150 children, mostly boys.
Dr. Barbara Firestone, who is vice chair of the commission, was in Fresno on Saturday signing her book, "Autism Heroes." Here's my post on that book signing and speech. She is CEO of The Help Group. The nonprofit serves children with special needs related to autism, Asperger's Disorder, learning disabilities, attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, mental retardation, abuse and emotional problems.
Gary Cole, an actor on the "West Wing" series appeared at the news conference to support the bills. His daughter has autism. The Sacramento Bee reports this statement from Cole: "As parent of a child with autism spectrum disorder, I am thrilled with the autism legislative package because it addresses so many of the issues that our family went through when we got our first diagnosis."
