A couple of bills in the Assembly would strip teens of their drivers' licenses if they drop out of school, with some exceptions. Here's today's story on the effort.
I like the idea, but I'd go it one better: Don't let anyone have a drivers' license until they reach the age of 18. Or 21, maybe. After all, cars are the No. 1 killer of teens. If we really cared, we'd keep them from settling in behind the wheel until they get a little older.
A hardship? Hardly. Let 'em ride the bus. Maybe we'd get more and better buses in Fresno if there were more riders.
Not that it would help much, I suppose. Driving around Fresno it's as easy to spot grownups driving stupidly as it is to catch teens in the act.
The bill has to many loopholes. No checks and balances. Plus that would mean taking up more time at the DMV also many parents will just write their kids an excuse to get the license, so this isnt going to work. Its a lame attempt. If they want the law to work just bann the teens from driving until their 18.
if one follows the money,(darkly), every accident is a very good thing indeed for the gross nat'l product. consider how many people make money from hormone rageing, video-game-playing,cellphone wielding, teenagers, who, (in their minds)are immortal, and often drive as though there was a race in progress...if only to the next light. The DMV should take it's cue from the europeans, who demand a lot more skills than our sleepy instructors could ever provide.
They should ban the license until they are 18. The whole concept of gettiong a license at 16 is klost now anyways since they can't drive with their friends until 18 anyway and we don't have enough offcers to pull over every teen to make sure they are abiding by that law.
Why penalize all teens when some drive irresponsibly?
How about throwing out Assembly Members for getting into the private business of citizens.
Dittos Rich. How can I be the man when "You the Man".
I would love nothing more than for my daughter to be able to drive in three years at sixteen so long as she is still doing as well in school as she is now. The problem is not their driving but more their focus on radios and cell phones. I think I would be more comfortable taking the stereo out than having new laws that can't be enforced.
I think this all started with rock-n-roll music. We should have laws against rock-n-roll. Worse yet, rap music, the death penalty for listening to rap.
We should also have laws against teens who wear cloths above the ankles.
For that matter let's bring "burkas" back in fashion and have the Taliban enforce the laws.
Teens should not wear pants that fall off below the butt crack, if so they shall have 50 lashings, tared, feathered, and made the subject of public ridicule.
Come on people, let's get real and leave the teens alone we already have laws in place for people who do unlawful acts.
