CSU campus guarantees entrance to qualified foster kids

San Diego County foster children are moving to the top of the admissions list at Cal State University, San Marcos under what officials are calling a historic agreement, according to a story in the San Diego Union-Tribune. What do you think?

The university -- which rejected almost 2,600 applicants last year -- is guaranteeing enrollment to any foster youth who meets its admissions standards in a deal between the school and San Diego County, which has about 6,000 children in its foster system. About 200 turn 18 years old each year. The move comes two months after Cal State capped enrollment at current levels and closed application windows months earlier than normal in response to the state's proposed budget cuts.

The agreement, to be announced tomorrow morning on campus, is the first of its kind between a Cal State school and a foster system, officials say.

The university's admissions standards are a 2.5 grade-point average and a high school or equivalent degree. Students also must take the SAT, but no minimum score is required.

Would they be taking spots that now go to illegal aliens.Liberals might not find this acceptable.I think guaranteeing anyone anything is a mistake.Anyone here legally needs to earn their spot and take their place in line. All this social experimentation has got to end.

The foster kids as well as everyone else have the opportubity to get good grades and get in on their own merit and are we paying for this education as well. Just another case of favortism to a group of individuals. I cringe to think of my child trying to get into a college she wants with all this going on.

This relates to the UC admissions policy where grades only count for 50% of consideration for admission. Hardships account for most of the rest. So, this leads out kids whose parents worked hard to keep a stable family, possibly religious - gasp- so their kids could concentrate on grades. Our son, a UC Davis graduate, probably would not be admitted today.

God forbid that we should do anything to help kids who aren't so fortunate. Let's keep on stratifying our society and keep the haves and have-nots as far apart as possible!

No, Mike. It's not about keeping them out. But grades and SAT scores should be a major factor in admissions, not just half.

I have no problem with the disadvantaged getting in to college as long as they have dpone the hard work in school and aren't taking up a spot that another deserving individual could have and so long as they are not completely government funded. Equality for all.
