Political campaigns have a way of sucking the morality right out of a candidate as they squander their souls for votes. Did Sen. John McCain do that in last week's U.S. Senate vote on torture?
This is from the Washington Post: "McCain sided with the Bush administration on the waterboarding ban passed by the Senate, saying in a statement that the measure goes too far by applying military standards to intelligence agencies. He also said that current laws already forbid waterboarding and urged the administration to declare the practice illegal."
So where is the Republican presidential candidate on the torture question? Sounds like he's waffling to get conservative votes. Will he waffle back to the center in the general election to get moderate votes?
The Los Angeles Times thumped McCain in this editorial on his recent torture vote in the Senate.
The refrain of the left seems to be to rephrase the old John Lennon song to-All we are saying-"Is Give Please a Chance".They are not waterboarding teachers , priests and relief workers. These are bonafide terrorists who have information vital to the security of the U.S. and its' citizens and most certainly would not and have not returned the favor of fair treatment.Who knows what "LIttle John" is up to with his previous position and now contrary vote.I don't trust him.It would be interesting to see how much money could be raised with a bumper sticker "Americans For Torture".If your short list mentioned is torture-I'm for it.
What makes you think 'conservatives' are pro-torture? John McCain is a moral giant among American politicians who has had -- and passed up -- many previous opportunities to pander to any number of political special interests, including on the media-hyped question of waterboarding. John McCain has more credibility than anyone in the Senate (or at the Washington Post, or at the Bee) on any question of torture. If he says the Senate bill goes too far, the Senate bill goes to far. To question McCain's integrity just because a WaPo reporter doesn't like (or understand) what he says embarrasses the pundit, not McCain.
So everyone that was ever tortured by the CIA is guilty of heinous crimes against the U.S.? Including taxi drivers and young boys? C'mon, Brian, you should know better by now than to take anything this administration says at face value.
As for the "Straight Talk Express," it looks like it's developed a bit of wobble in the steering mechanism.
Mike(D)-Does that mean you don't want a bumper sticker?Tony-if Obama wins maybe the Clintons and McCain will disappear along with their self serving positions.Check McCain's voting record the last 2 years. It's almost liberal.Integrity? Straight Talk? He'll have to answer for that during the campaign.Conservatives for torture?-maybe more than you think. The list printed doesn't sound like torture. Cutting off body parts, maiming, poisoning-that sounds more like torture. If someone was going to kill your family member how far would you go or allow someone to go to stop it? Aren't we all family?
