Republican Rudy Giuliani's political collapse was complete today, as his presidential campaign faded away in the Sunshine State. The former New York mayor finished a distant third in Florida, a state that he had to win to get back into GOP contention. Sen. John McCain finished first, with former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney second.
McCain is now in excellent position entering next week's Super Tuesday primaries. Giuliani is expected to drop out of Wednesday and throw his support to McCain, according to this story in the Associated Press.
Giuliani led the Republican polls last year, and was expected to be a strong contender for the GOP nomination. But his strategy of bypassing the early primaries and charging to the finish using Florida as a launching pad proved faulty. Giuliani never got out of Florida.

The real story this morning is not Rudy - who may or may not stay in the race, but the exit of John Edwards - narrowing the Demos to two notorious leftists, Hillary and Obama. The real story might well be the California free-for-all debate. It’s bound to be a raucous affair!
Everybody’s dumping on Hill & Bill. In the last few days or so they have been trashed by Teddy Kennedy, Caroline Kennedy, John Kerry, Ralph Nader, Al Sharpton and various other Demo party riftraff.
Do you know what happens when you back a junkyard dog into a corner? Better be ready for the fight of your life! We have yet to see just how "down & dirty" Bill & Hill can get.
The Clinton’s have always had a Machiavellian willingness to do whatever it takes to achieve their goal of power. The "end justifying the means" is really the heart of their insidious political pragmatism. Goodness, benevolence or morality plays no part in that equation.
Poor, pathetic, naive, simpleton, Obama! He has no idea of what he is about to incur. You can’t fix stupid!
Parenthetically, it has also occurred to me that this whole Kennedy, Kerry, Nader, Sharpton thing may be nothing more than an elaborate scam concocted by Bill & Hill in order to appear more centrist and moderate. They can ill afford to be identified with the likes of Kennedy and Kerry. It may be the Clinton’s Sister Souljah moment.
Bob Novak has opined that the Clinton’s California strategy, black vs brown, is risky. That racial harmony would be put at risk, setting one segment of the populace against another - in the Clinton’s scheme of things - is just the price that must be paid in order to achieve power. It’s ruthless and opportunistic - but that’s Bill & Hill!
Meanwhile: Chicago newspapers reported that Tony Rezko –– Obama’s fixer and bagman and Hillary Clinton’s photo pal –– was arrested on a bond violation.
No wonder Michael Savage has argued for years that liberalism is a form of mental illness.
You're quoting Savage on mental illness? This is a guy who said of Larry King and Wolf Blitzer: "The two of them together look like the type that would have pushed Jewish children into the oven to stay alive one more day to entertain the Nazis."
You can keep Savage. I'll stay on the outside of that asylum.
