Schwarzenegger discusses state budget impact on Valley in this video blog

Click here to see and hear what Gov. Schwarzenegger said about his proposed state budget after his meeting with The Bee's editorial board on Monday afternoon.

In this interview (which is just under four minutes), Schwarzenegger talks about the impact budget cuts will have on education and whether releasing prisoners early could make California less safe. That's a big issue in the Valley because of all the prisons in the region. He also says a budget that is structurally sound will be good for all Californians,

He has good ideas on things that need to be done however I just don't see it without raising taxes. It is just not wise to make cuts in education and in the prison system. These should be last resort. As I have said before there are other places that can be cut like vehicles and gas for state workers. If inmates are released the crime rate will go up and it is a slap in the face to the officers that put their lives on the line everyday to get them off the streets as well as to the prosecuters that worked so hard to present the cases. He says serious criminals won't be released but minor drug offenders will escalate the crimes because they know we can't afford to lock them up. We really need to have an outside panal look at where we can make better cuts.

A combination of cuts in overspending on pet projects and the closing of loopholes in the tax system to increase revenues that should already be in the coffers is the solution...

Just like I suggested to Florez a couple of weeks ago.

There are tax revenues out there that even those "nasty corporations" would be willing to pay their fair share of if they would not be penalized for paying a partial while disputing the whole thing they are being levied.

California is notorious for trying to over-assess ridiculous amounts on out-of-state corporations via audit when they need more money and can't get it at home.

Problem is, the corporations just legally pass that cost to the California businesses they are doing business with in the first place, (hint hint this is the same as raising taxes without doing it publicly).

So...make it fair and people will pay.

No one wants failure, they just want fairness.

We've seen this cycle several times now over the last few decades. In good times, the State is flush with cash. Then a downward turn comes, and Sacramento is scrambling to make ends meet.

We can't be eviscerating the schools and shafting the poor every time we have a downturn. Schwarzeneggar was elected on the promise that he would fix this broken system. Instead, he acted as if the recent upturn in State revenues would last forever. Now, in panic mode, he's proposing to gut State services in order to keep his pledge not to raise taxes.

The Governor and his fellow Republicans are going to have to get over their fanatical obsesssion with not raising taxes, and be willing to look at the revenue side of the ledger. Trying to fix the budget by draconian cuts without addressing systemic problems in the State tax system is irresponsible and insane.

If the Gov. wants to release all those inmates, we should release half of them near his home in Sacramento, and the other half near his home in Southern California. Then he would know it feels to be over whelmed with all of them, and how insecure all of us will feel. It is always the poor, mentally ill, and schools that the Republicans want to cut when they get themselves in a budget mess.
