Fresno Bee backs McCain in GOP primary, Edwards in Democratic primary in California

The Fresno Bee's editorial board is supporting Sen. John McCain in the Republican presidential primary election on Feb. 5 in California and former Sen. John Edwards in the Democratic primary. The presidential recommendations were published in today's Bee. You can read the McCain and Edwards editorials by clicking here.

Of the GOP candidates still running, McCain is the best fit for the San Joaquin Valley. He has a reasonable position on immigration reform -- one that strikes a balance between securing our border and meeting the labor needs of Valley farmers and other industries that rely on foreign workers. He also favors free trade policies that would be good for the Valley. We think he's wrong on the war in Iraq, and the United States needs an exit strategy. On balance, McCain is the best in the Republican field

We like Edwards on the Democratic side because he stands up for middle-class families. They've had a tough time under the Bush Administration and the latest economic problems will hit them the hardest. Edwards offers a message of hope for America that is desperately needed.

The Bee's editorial board recognizes that Edwards has run behind Sen. Hillary Clinton and Sen. Barack Obama in the early primaries and caucuses and will have a difficult time overtaking the frontrunners in the Democratic contest. But we believe that his message is beginning to get traction and he can move up if he does well in Saturday's South Carolina primary.

Great News!!
Thank you Fresno Bee!

We too believe John Edwards has the best plans and solutions to move our country forward - and per MLK, III's letter to John Edwards this week - Edwards best promotes his father's message of economic justice for ALL!

We will always have a political divide - and the Big problem for most Americans is not "disunity" in DC - but the VAST influence of Washington lobbyists that donate bribes to Congress critters to maintain the VAST Corporate Welfare that flows from DC - paid by U.S. taxpayers.

Our tax system is STILL based on slave labor - rewarding wealth - not work.

Go Edwards!

Those picks aren't too bad but I am not sure Edwards is going to be around if he doesn't get a win under his belt. I am wavering between Mc Cain and Huckabee subject to change.

Well, my guess was half right. I'm a bit surprised you picked Edwards because you've scarcely mentioned him in the blogs. He's not a bad pick, though I prefer Obama. You focused on policies, but there's really very little difference in policy positions among the top three Democrats. So for me, the real choice is which candidate has the qualities that can unite more Americans behind his or her policies. To me, the clear choice would be Obama, with his ability to appeal to Independents and moderate Republicans as well as Democrats.

Thank you for recognizing the fact that John Edwards is the best candidate to get the job done!!!

I would not support either of them..

Both have allowed the States they Represent to violate the US Constitution Article I, Section 10.

There has not been an amendment to change what the Supreme law of the land says "Shall"(mandatory in law) not do..

All Federal Reserve Notes are loaned into circulation thus they are Bills of Credit, according to Russell L. Munk, Assitant General Counsel of the US Treasury.

Also they are not Gold or Silver coin. Gold and silver were removed fro the nations currency in violation of the US Constitution by Executive Orders by FDR in 1933 and Nixon in 1971.
Executive Orders DO NOT lawfully amend the US COnsitution the proper methhod is listed in Article V of the US Const.

A court ruled in 2 landmark Minnesota cases, which has not been overturn as of today. The Cases of First National Bank of Montgomery vs. Daly (1969) and Martin V. Mahoney (1969) both rulled:
The Federal Reserve Notes in question in this case are unlawful and void upon the following grounds.

1.

Said Notes are fiat money, not redeemable in gold or silver coin upon their face, not backed by gold or silver, and the notes are in want of some real or substantial fund being provided for their payment in redemption. There is no mode provided for enforcing the payment of the same. There is no mode provided for the enforcement of the payment of the Notes in anything of value.
2.

The Notes are obviously not gold or silver coin.
3.

The sole consideration paid for the One Dollar Federal Reserve Notes is in the neighborhood of nine-tenths of one cent, and therefore, there is no lawful consideration behind said Notes.
4.

That said Federal Reserve Notes do not conform to Title 12, United States Code, Sections 411 and 418. Title 31 USC, Section 462 (392), insofar as it attempts to make Federal Reserve Notes and circulating Notes of Federal Reserve Banks and National Banking Associations a legal tender for all debts, public and private, it is unconstitutional and void, being contrary to Article I, Section 10, of the Constitution of the United States, which prohibits any State from making anything but gold and silver coin a tender, or impairing the obligation of contracts.

THu8s both McCain and Edwards have violated their Oaths of Office by allowing the states they represent to violate the US Constitution..

Thank you!!! Thank you Fresno Bee!!

John Edwards strongest for America!!

Are you nuts!! Edwards!!

I think we here in the valley know a slimy lawyer when we see one! He talks a good line in his smooth southern accent, but has done nothing to back it up. He couldn't even keep a senate seat.

Please, get serious and choose a democratic candidate who is has a chance of making it to November.

The editorial staff is OBVIOUSLY hoping for a republican victory in the fall!!

People who vote for Edwards might as well just vote for Hillary. This splits the anti-Hillary vote, so she (and Bill) can skate right into the nomination.

The Clintons are showing their slimy campaign tactics and negative ads. How is Hillary going to function in the white house with Bill sticking his nose in everything? What a mess.

Vote for Obama, a positive, thoughtful, well-spoken leader.

Thanks so much for choosing a man who has been working for those without the contacts and influence in our society. Mr. Edwards can be a real force for change and not simply empty rhetoric as thrown out by Obama or Hillary. Thanks again!

Now I know the real reason you picked Edwards - his supporters are just sooo grateful!

Thank you Fresno Bee for your wise endorsement choice! What's equally gratifying is to see a major newspaper buck the ugly media trend of trivializing Edwards candidacy. I hope your endorsement will enlighten some of your readers to the fact that the best candidate in the race is the one that most of the media ignore. Perhaps your endorsement will also embarass enough people in the media that they will stop participating in the organized effort to push Edwards out of this race.

I think what Martin Luther King III said to Senator John Edwards this week was very good advice for all of us:

"... I urge you: keep going. Ignore the pundits, who think this is a horserace, not a fight for justice. My dad was a fighter. As a friend and a believer in my father’s words that injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere, I say to you: keep going. Keep fighting. My father would be proud."

If enough voters listen to Mr. King's advice they too will ignore the pundits and base their vote on who they think is the BEST candidate. Because when voters vote for who they feel is the best candidate we win general elections. When they try to pick a candidate based on who the media tells them will win the primary nomination they usually end up with a dud of a candidate that loses in the general election. I hope that voters trust their own judgement instead of jumping on the bandwagon of either of our two frontrunners. Remember in 2000 the media gave us George Bush and in the 2004 Primary they pushed Kerry on us. These two choices alone should tell everyone that the majority of people in the media have a lousy record for picking good candidates. And knowing that they have such a lousy record at picking good candidates why do we continue to listen to what they say?

John Edwards is the only real uniter in the current presidential field. I met him and worked for his election to the Senate in North Carolina. He is a man of vision and charisma, and he truly cares for the working folks and middle class of the United States.
A vote for John Edwards in the Democratic Primary is a vote for a winner in November.

I'm guessing that the last Dem. debate is what helped form this endorsement...the 'bickering children' crap made the party look idiotic and unelectable,..Edwards was the grown-up that night... personally, I still can't find a lick of differance between any of the candidates, in either party, and I can't recall a presidential election where the previous administration's performance was not the dominant theme, despite the single digit approval ratings, they are given a free pass by the democrats. and a get-out- of-jail-free card from congress.

When the candidates throw stones at one another they are out of my field of scope no matter who they are. If you can't run on a platform of issues without the childish crap of mudslinging then I don't want them to run our country.

Fresno Bee why are you overlooking the one candidate that's making any sense. Ron Paul is running under the republican ticket but he is the only one who voted against the war in iraq and the patriot act, calling them what they were, illegal and unconstitutional. Rather than tightening borders he would remove the federal incentive programs which are the things attracting many of the illegals in the first place. not necessarily the ones that want to come work honestly. He is absolutely for free trade and free market but he is against all these massive foreign aid programs that have bled the USA economy over the years. Is it something out of the Constitution which says 'trade with your neighbors, but stay out of entangling alliances'. He is promising historic cuts in the role our government plays in our lives and the role the USA attempts to play in being "big brother" to the world. These are dearly needed changes in this country and he seems like the only candidate with the courage and will to carry them out if elected, hell he's been the only one suggesting them at all. Ron Paul is a strict Constitutionalist, he wants to run this country the way it was designed by our founding fathers, does that seem so crazy? I would think the media itself, owing so much to the Bill of Rights, would be more interested in this man. Lastly I want to urge people to seek out information about Dr. Ron Paul on the internet, how is it that Ron Pauls campaign has endured so strongly "behind the scenes" off the big press and off the airwaves of the major networks. It started 11 candidates now down to 5 and he is hanging strong...how?? He doesn't get in-depth MSNBC coverage or a write-up in the Fresno Bee. The internet is the last vessel remotely capable in this day to organize revolutionary change and Ron Paul is a bit of a revolutionary man himself, look him up on youtube, visit his website , google Ron Paul. The man has a strong history, strong ideas and strong character. The internet is the last mass medium that is still by and for the people and it has bee very good to Ron Paul so far... coincidence?

google Ron Paul!
