Does Fresno Unified's school superintendent deserve every dime he gets?

Michael Der Manouel writes in a column in today's Bee that Fresno Unified School District superintendent Michael Hanson has earned the big, fat raise that some people are pitching a fit over. Read his take on the controversy by clicking here.

I don't have a problem with keeping Hanson's raise competitive, but the board should have had more confidence in its decision. The school board members should always give plenty of time for people to have a conversation over such an important issue as compensation. People don't expect to win every time, but they can hold very long resentments when their ideas are summarily dismissed. People need to know their concerns have been heard and considered.

The board sold itself and the superintendent short by rushing this through, as if they are afraid of a discussion on the matter. They can hear it now, or they can hear about it when they run for re-election. Fumble.

I have no problem with him being compensated but just feel the decision should have been made after they knew what the budget was going to be cause now if the budget is less it will fall on the students and teachers in lack of materials and text books.

Mike Der Manouel also has no problem with how his right-wing side of the aisle has turned Washington D.C. into "earmark heaven" laden with bridges to nowhere. Even the likes of Sean Hannity and Newt Gingrich lament how guys that Mike adores have ignored conservative principles and have sold this country down the river. The public has no more been served by this board majority than it has been by the Congress run by folks Der Manouel admires. Go ahead and get loud and angry Mike, but the people of Fresno, just like the rest of the nation, have had enough of this kind of arrogant, name-calling hypocrisy.

Bill, if you had just googled my name, you would see that I am the leading critic of bad government in the San Joaquin Valley and I don't discriminate. I have written repeated editorials, blogs and commentary about wasteful spending by Republicans. Do some research man. I know just how bad the GOP is. Its worse than even you know. BTW, earmarks have INCREASED under Speaker Pelosi. That is why Congress approval rating is below 20%.

The FUSD board's decision was prudent, and courageous.
