Young rider needs help with recovery

Bee readers with very long memories may recall a year-long series in the features section called "The First Year of Life." It was a monthly feature on twins Matthew and Melissa Griffin, and it was a vehicle to discuss child development through the life story of these twins. It told all about the Griffin babies as they grew and gave insights into the challenges their young parents faced as they adjusted to family life with two little babies and their big sister, Jana. I was the reporter and Diana Baldrica was the photographer.

Matthew and Melissa are now 21 years old. They have grown into fine young adults. There was a story in this morning's Bee, however, that gives a twist to the story we could never have imagined when we were experiencing that joyful first year together.

Melissa grew up to be an accomplished equestrienne, but unfortunately her love also has changed her life. She was seriously injured in a riding accident in June. There were head and spinal injuries, but she is making progress. Right now, she needs rehabilitation as quickly as possible in a facility with very good care.

Her parents, Greg and JoEllen, were divorced years ago and both have remarried, but they remain good friends and are tirelessly working as one big family in their daughter's best interest. They believe the best place for her is The Centre for Neuro Skills in Bakersfield. Insurance has denied coverage; the treatment is expected to cost about $150,000.

Don't get me started on health insurance companies who would deny coverage of treatment for a young woman with her whole life in front of her -- but the parents are not letting this setback stop them from getting care for their daughter. A barbecue fundraiser will be held Saturday at the Tulare County Stockyard to help pay for Melissa's treatment.

Melissa grew up in Clovis and was a student at Reedley College at the time of the accident.
The fundraiser will start at 5 p.m. with a social hour, followed by a 6 p.m. dinner at the stockyard, 9641 Avenue 384, Dinuba. There will be a silent auction. For more infomation, call JoEllen Moreno at (559) 360-0082. If you have a heart for cowgirls, she could sure use help.

I am amazed and thankful for the response from all of the local communities that are providing support for Melissa's recovery. The community of Dinuba particularly deserve recognition for providing exceptional support for this fundraiser.
