Politicians really don't want to fix illegal immigration

I argue in my column today that all the bluster from our elected leaders about fixing the illegal immigration problem is phony. They'd rather manipulate their constituents than come up with reasonable solutions to a problem that could be easily solved.

Here are two paragraphs from today's column:

There's something for everyone to demagogue. Why would a class of people who make their livelihoods out of offering false claims about controversial problems want to give up an issue that's so easy to manipulate?

Democrats can rally supporters who believe illegal immigrants are treated unfairly. That's a sizable voting bloc that will continue to grow as the demographics of this nation shift. Republicans can appeal to those who believe illegal immigrants are sucking tax dollars out of the system and are responsible for every crime committed in America. The GOP is not about to give up those talking points.

Do you agree or disagree with me? Let me know in the comments section of this blog.

Probably some truth to what you say.Mainly we have gutless politicians with little regard for what's best for our nation. We have the tools already to get things going in the right direction.Build the fence and enforce the laws passed in '86.If we won't use these already approved means what will new legislation do for us?They are just wasting time and compromising our security.

It seems to me that so many of our problems are stymied by the lobbyist element. Does anyone know of a few links discussing great ideas for reform?

yes I absolutely agree with you. Republicans need to look at the big picture; the illegal immigrants don't commit all the crimes, they work in fields. Without their work there would be nobody to do that work because people are just too lazy. The republicans should focus on getting them to be legal citizens and stop blaming them for our problems.
