Sometimes I know the world we live in is an ugly place. 
An article in yesterday's Miami Herald says "The FBI is investigating threats against Leonard Pitts Jr., a Pulitzer Prize-winning columnist for The Miami Herald, after a column he wrote about black-on-white crime triggered a furor on white supremacist Web sites."
Days after the Herald published Pitts' column, which ran in The Fresno Bee on June 4, a white supremacist Web site posted his address, home phone number and wife's name. Several other Internet sites followed suit, and one gave directions to his house along with a satellite image of the neighborhood.
Pitts has received dozens of hostile phone calls at his home and about 400 e-mails, said Dave Wilson, The Miami Herald's managing editor for news.
The Herald articles goes on to say that Wilson tried to prevent the incident from escalating by sending an e-mail to Bill White, editor for the site, asking him to delete Pitts' address and phone number. He said White replied: "We have no intention of removing Mr. Pitts' personal information. Frankly, if some loony took the info and killed him, I wouldn't shed a tear. That also goes for your whole newsroom.''
Out of all the columnists we use, Pitts is one of my favorites. His opinions are thought-provoking and written in down-to-earth language. He speaks with common sense. The fact that his words have angered those who spew hate only reinforces my respect for his work.
Blind hatred is the most unreasonable, destructive force on this earth. We can only pray he does not become a martyr for the simple value of free intelligent thought.
To the menacing party (though I doubt it would be meaningful to those in such a state of mind):
Take a good, long look at yourselves. Self-righteous talk of bloodshed and ignorance can bring only more bloodshed, ignorance and pain. The thought that always comes to mind at such rash behavior is this: The last time I saw anyone behave as such was a 14-year-old high school student with an ego problem. What if it were you? Your wife, your husband, your mother, your child...
Pitts is one of my favorite columnists, too. I often check his website to catch any columns the Bee doesn't run.
Ironically, these threats have come as a result of a column Pitts wrote about hate crimes, and the desire of some white people want to emphasize black-on-white hate crimes. Yet their reaction shows how prevalant hatred of African Americans still is in some segments of this country.
Leonard Pitts columns are usually pretty weak and especially so when he thinks he is being witty or clever. Obviously it doesn't take much to win a Pulitzer.
However the actions taken by Bill White and the website are unacceptable if true.Folks like those that have commented bemoan the ever present so called hatred toward blacks but find the behavior of blacks toward whites in the Duke rape case, for example, acceptable. What a bunch of hypocrites
"So-called hatred" towards blacks? What planet do you live on, Brian? Do you know any actual black people?
And by the way, the prosecutor in the Duke case was white.
Earth, Mike. Yes I do know some black people. As a matter of fact I know people of a lot of different colors. Nifong is not the only person involved in this. Were you paying attention?
Nifong is the one who made the decision to prosecute, based on the allegations of one young woman who happened to be black. Everyone else was just a bit player or bystander.
When we whites have been enslaved for 100 years, had our civil rights denied for another 100 years, when we earn less money and have shorter life spans than blacks, when we have to pay higher interest rates for the same loans, and get offered fewer jobs than blacks, and when we see pictures of whites being lynched with black townspeople standing around watching and taking pictures, then we can start complaining about black hatred towards whites.
As it is, with all the reasons we've given them to hate us, the remarkable thing is that so few of them do.
