Happy New Year

I don't make formal New Year's resolutions because I usually don't keep them. But here are some things that I would like to do in 2007 to improve myself.

Like many Americans, I want to lose weight and get healthier. I'll be going to the gym more regularly and eating more sensibly. I also want to be more patient and not stress out so much. That will be difficult.

I'm also committing myself to spend more time with friends. It seems that in this busy world, I have not been connecting regularly with all the important people in my life.

Do you have a plan to improve yourself in 2007? Post your resolutions and strategies here. I'd love to see your ideas about how to keep your commitments.

It seems that more people I know are discussing "resolutions" this year than ever before. I mean, serious commitments to do things for themselves that in previous years have been jokes only.

Losing weight is a big one for many of us "pre-senior" baby boomers. Re-focusing on things more spiritual in ones world is another or more time spent with other people we consider close.

I personally am commiting to all of those. But mostly I am committing to follow the advice of a sign that hangs above my desk. It reads "Simplify."

I've applied it to my business but not to my personal life. As a result, my business has flourished at the expense of my personal life.

I wrote an email to Rick Bentley and Don Munro last week about the lack of what I would classify as "fun" movies (my favorite is "Cars") in their Top Ten Best Movies list.

Rick called me to clarify their position on the list and to point out what he characterized as "fun" movies on the list. We disagreed on "Cars." We did agree that "fun" is in the eye of the movie-goer.

The actual point of my letter was that from all the stories reported by the Fresno Bee this last year, it seems we are all taking our jobs (and maybe ourselves) too seriously. Don't get me wrong. There are serious issues facing our Valley cities and counties.

All of the issues and our resolutions, I think, can be boiled down to one statement; "Quality of Life."

My hope is that we don't miss living the lifestyle we are trying to protect. As I told Rick, maybe if we all lighten up a bit in 2007 we can have some fun and still get everything done that needs doing.

My strategy? Read the sign.
