There's an election coming. . .

. . . and you can't vote unless you're registered. The last day to register to vote in the Nov. 7 election is Oct. 23. Registration forms are available at libraries, post offices, fire stations, city halls, the DMV and some Fresno County offices. If you're not a Fresno County resident, check with the registrar of voters in your county.

Voters can also register to vote online: www.ss.ca.gov.

Fresno County Clerk Victor Salazar says the Fresno County Elections Department, 2221 Kern St. will be open weekdays from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. and on the four Saturdays before the election -- Oct. 14, Oct. 21, Oct 28 and Nov. 4 -- from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Voting by absentee ballot begins Oct. 9.

In response to the McLane baseball player sentenced to 8 mos., $6000 & 3 mos probation for hitting another player and breaking his jaw, I'm astounded that a judge would hand down such a harsh sentence.

I understand his wanting to set an example but this is way out of line. How about the probation, paying the $6,000 and community service and anger management classes!

What kind of damage will the jail sentence do to him? Does he really deserve this kind of punishment. I certainly don't condone physical attacks on others, especially in sports, but this is ridiculous and should be overturned!!!
