Even athlete's mom gets endorsement deal
What a sweet deal for mom of Olympic gold medalist swimmer Michael Phelps: Your kid gets eight gold medals and you get an endorsement deal from Chico's.
Debbie Phelps has signed a deal in the "low six figures" to appear in the catalog and marketing for Chico's, the clothing store that is the headquarters of brightly colored baby boomer fashion.
This deal worked in reverse: A long-time Chico's fan, Phelps stocked up on outfits before going to China. With her face splashed all over TV, hundreds of Chico's regulars recognized the outfits and contacted the retailer, which named a collection of clothes after her.
She'll never top the millions Michael Phelps has already racked up in endorsements from Visa, Speedo, Hilton, AT&T and Omega, with more on the way.
Nor will she top Olympic gold medalist and gymnast Shawn Johnson, who has signed deals with CoverGirl, Land Rover, McDonald's, Coca-Cola, OroWheat bread and Hy-Vee grocery.
But hey, six figures for watching your son win gold ain't bad.
