arrowWaterston helps fund mailer for Magsig

It looked like Fresno County Supervisor Bob Waterston had finally come off the fence in the battle between Clovis Council Member Nathan Magsig and political activist Debbie Poochigian -- one of whom will succeed him.

Earlier this month, his campaign committee gave $10,000 to Citizens for Representative Government, a political organization that in turn has spent more than $3,600 on an independent expenditure in support of Magsig.

But Waterston insisted Saturday that he’s not endorsing Magsig. “I’m not endorsing either one of them,” he said.

Waterston said he was asked to give money to Citizens for Representative Government, and did so because he trusted the group to spend the money wisely.

And, he said, it did.

Despite insisting he wasn’t endorsing Magsig, Waterston still said: “I have no problem that [Citizens for Representative Government] gave to Nathan. Nathan is a good guy.”

Also giving to the political group were Steve Rau, general counsel for Granville Homes, and former Fresno City Council Member Dan Ronquillo.

Both are board members for the Coalition for Urban Renewal Excellence, a nonprofit agency that builds and rehabilitates houses for low- and moderate-income people. Magsig is executive director of the organization.

Another last-minute mailer hitting homes in the 5th supervisorial district ahead of Tuesday’s election was more directly against Poochigian, calling her “too far to the right; not one of us.”

That mailer came from a group known as “Friends of the Valley PAC.” On Thursday, the Service Employees International Union Local 521 Independent Expenditure Committee gave $10,000 to the Friends of the Valley PAC.
