MAPA endorses local candidates
After holding a candidate forum Saturday, the Mexican American Political Association made its endorsements in several local elections:
For Fresno mayor, the association picked attorney Tom Boyajian over 10 other candidates in the race. Boyajian's record as a Fresno City Council Member, including his support for Community Development Block Grants and a police auditor, helped him get the nod, said Ben Benavides, the association's president emeritus.
For Fresno County Supervisor, District 5, MAPA picked Nathan Magsig. Magsig's record on the Clovis City Council helped him win the endorsement over his opponent, businesswoman Debbie Poochigian.
For Fresno County Supervisor, District 2, MAPA endorsed incumbent Susan Anderson, over Fresno City Council Member Brian Calhoun and Certified Public Accountant Paul Dictos. Anderson has a proven record of helping the underserved, Benavides said.
For Fresno City Council District 2, MAPA selected businessman and college student Michael Karbassi over law professor Andreas Borgeas. The two are competing to replace Calhoun. Karbassi showed a willingness to hold government accountable, Benavides said.
For Fresno City Council District 4, Susan Good received the endorsement over incumbent Larry Westerlund. Good's record as a banker and as a district director for two state senators helped persuade MAPA.
In state Assembly District 31, incumbent Democrat Juan Arambula got the endorsement over Republican businessman Clifford Archer.
In state Assembly District 30, Shafter City Council Member Fran Florez, a Democrat, won the endorsement over Republican Danny Gilmore, a retired California Highway Patrol officer. They're vying to replace Democrat Nicole Parra.
MAPA did not make an endorsement in Fresno City Council District 6 because none of the three candidates attended Saturday's forum, Benavides said.
