arrowGay marriage: an economic opportunity?

My email inbox is being flooded with reaction to today's California Supreme Court ruling that overturns the ban on gay marriage.

The most interesting reaction comes from Joe Mathews, an Irvine senior fellow at the New America Foundation. On the new Fox & Hounds blog, Mathews wonders if "California and its businesses [might] gain a unique advantage by being one of the few places that gays and lesbians could marry?"

"Would the state become a draw for gay couples?" he asks. "Would those couples bring more wealth to the state, start more businesses, add to the tax base? Or do they consume services that negate that effect?"

Gov. Schwarzenegger, who yesterday looked to the state lottery to solve the state's economic woes, says: “I respect the Court’s decision and as Governor, I will uphold its ruling. Also, as I have said in the past, I will not support an amendment to the constitution that would overturn this state Supreme Court ruling.”

Other, more conservative Republicans, are blasting the ruling. Here's what Assembly Republican Leader Mike Villines of Clovis says:

“Fortunately, more than 1 million Californians have signed ballot petitions to place a constitutional amendment before the voters this November that will write into the state Constitution that marriage should be between one man and one woman. I am confident that the people of California will again overwhelmingly vote to preserve and protect traditional marriage."

Comments:

How is this for odd.

I am 'bent old geezer' also a Catholic, been the whole of
my life.

I believe that 'marriage' is sacred and to be done between a man and a woman. Not 'Steve and Adam' or 'Jill and Jane'.

Think it right horrid that some members of the 'lavender elite' think that 'marriage' will give them more self esteem. Hardly think it will make them any more better at staying together. Fact is, where they have 'gay marriage'(yuck, hate that term) they seperate just as quickly as the rest.

Am of the opinion that this is just some members of society trying to make a political statement and has nothing to do with two folks loving one another. A piece of paper does not matter.

If the paper doesn't matter then why do you have such a hard time minding your own business? If it doesn't affect your life maybe you should quit judging and causing others grief.

It might surprise some folks that a large number of individuals have been PRAYING for some time that the State Supreme Court would eventually see that loving couples regardless of gender deserve the right to make the commitment of marriage. Perhaps God responded to their prayers and their message of love over discrimination.

Once gays are allowed to marry, it will be interesting to see whether their marriages or heterosexual marriages have higher divorce rates.

Last time I looked, what happens in the community is my business. I have the right to express opinion.

Sadly, it only shows how folks will get worked up and try to quiet any voice that is not in agreement.

Hang onto hat, think the courts will be soon packed with 'gay couples' filing for divorce.
