Companies go green, Manpower wants to help
Going green is all the rage among the corporate set.
But what exactly does that mean? Definitely not tree hugging, although embracing new concepts that make money while saving energy, materials and the environment is definitely encouraged.
The path is hardly simple, and Kara Kenney, spokeswoman for Green West Expo (May 20-22 in Los Angeles), said the green employment sector is so new that often company officials don't know what to include in job descriptions.
"No matter who you are, big or small, the sustainability initiative can be daunting," she said.
Regardless, the interest means jobs. And Manpower, which provides workplace services, wants to help provide them. Manpower has an office in Fresno.
"The green marketplace is growing immensely," said Lee Fossey, Manpower regional director of Central California and greater Los Angeles.
Kenney said not only is the consumer requesting sustainability in products and from the companies he or she buys from but governments are increasingly mandating that companies go green. "New careers are being created everyday," she said.
Manpower has sponsored the Green Careers Center at the Green West Expo at the Los Angeles Convention Center and is looking to be a leader in providing workers for the sector. Green West, organizers say, features a broad array of exhibits, conference panels, special events, keynote addresses and unique networking opportunities.
Fossey said the Green Careers Center is geared toward educating. He said workforce training programs are available, and Manpower is building relationships with various schools and colleges.
