arrowMore on Jesse Morrow Mountain (with pictures!)

Jeffry Long sends pictures of Jesse Morrow Mountain, along with a response to my March 6 column:
You can view the pictures here and here.

Here's what Jeffry had to say:

"Thank you for bringing attention to the Jesse Morrow issue in your Thursday column. Your point taken of "..it would all happen in plain view Monday through Saturday for four generations" is a point I have been photographing for several years. With the rain clearing the air I was able to get pictures as far west as Armstrong Avenue in Sunnyside on highway 180.

"My wife and I live under the shadow of the mountain, but even if we were not close by the prospect of mining on Jesse Morrow is odious. Fresno already has the impressions given to visitors by the Hwy 99 junkyard syndrome. Why turn the Kings Canyon gateway mountain into yet another way to denigrate our image?"

Comments:

I grew up in the shadow of this mountain. My siblings and I climbed it numerous times when we were growing up. I love to look at the graceful sweep of the base of the mountain below its craggy ridge when I drive up Hwy 180. It's loss would be irreplaceable. How do they propose to "mitigate" the destruction of a mountain?

They're already getting ready to tear up the Kings River bottom for sand and gravel. Why can't our elected "leaders" say no to this act of destruction? Are they too blinded by a few thousand dollars of campaign contributions to care about our heritage?
