Killer couch report examines chemical materials
Friends of the Earth plans to release a report Tuesday that says most Californians’ furniture contains toxic chemicals called halogenated fire retardants, officials from the organization said Friday.
These chemicals have been linked to cancer, birth defects, hormone disruption and neurological and reproductive dysfunction, and they particularly impact infants and children, the group said.
The report, “Killer Couches,” is based on a sample of 350 pieces of household furniture in California stores and domestic residences. The report’s authors are to be joined by California Assemblyman Mark Leno on a 9 a.m. conference call Tuesday to discuss the report and Assemblyman Leno’s legislation that would limit the use of such chemicals.
