Folksy and homespun, this one-man production is a strong, sturdy slice of Americana, and you could tell from the pre-play chatter amongst the audience at the Saroyan Theatre on Friday night that many in the crowd had seen Holbrook perform the role before.

Yet there's also a certain amount of tension in the air, especially once Holbrook takes the stage and starts to remind us just how tart and caustic Twain could be when talking about two of his favorite subjects: politics and religion. That tension arises between two uneasy camps. On one side are those in the audience hoping and longing for the "easy" Twain to dominate the evening with pithy one-liners, generalized politican bashing and easy-to-digest anecdotes. (When in doubt, make a joke about Congress. It's practically guaranteed a laugh.) This is Twain as the 19th Century version of David Letterman: glib, relaxed and cranky. On the other side are those who hope more for the fiery Twain to materialize: the man who doesn't just taunt Congress but also takes aim at the irrationality and laziness of voters as well; the thundering prophet who recites the piercing "War Prayer," which mocks the act of invoking God to smite one's enemies.

With 15 solid hours of memorized material from the famed author and humorist, Holbrook shapes each of his shows differently. You never know exactly what he'll perform. (The run continues 8 p.m. Saturday.)

But it shouldn't be any surprise which Twain dominated on Friday. We're just weeks away from a presidential election and are experiencing traumatic economic times. Holbrook chose selections from Twain that not only highlighted the crassness of politicians -- always a crowd pleaser -- but the transgressions of voters as well.

Part of the appeal of Twain's work is how timeless it can seem. Contemporary issues can be extrapolated from much of his material. For example, Holbrook recited a Twain routine in which he mocked Teddy Roosevelt for his blustery image and pompous demeanor. I'm sure that some Republicans in the audience on Friday immediately thought of a current Democratic analogy. Vice versa for the Democrats. It's ingenious humor, really: You have people laughing at the same jokes but with different protagonists.

Yet Holbrook didn't let it end there. He followed up with some of Twain's most searing pronouncements on the dangers of kowtowing to a particular political party or religion. In the evening's most powerful moment, he (as Twain, of course) chided the audience for its insistence on "membership in the herd." We'd rather be popular than right, he told us. We don't have the independence to think for ourselves.

And even more powerful: You don't have to revere someone else's belief or opinion. But if you're really going to be a fully developed human being, you have to respect that person's right to have it. I won't say that the audience became uncomfortable at such stern philosophical pronouncements. But I think that all of us might have shifted uneasily, if only for a second, as we contemplated the vigor with which we make our opinions known in this country.

Holbrook is a master as Twain, of course, and as the years have gone by, he's grown ever more seamlessly into the tics and mannerisms of the role. More than that, he is so comfortable in the part -- and just think of how many hours of his life he's spent in thousands of performances playing Twain -- that both the actor and the role seem to co-exist in a state of cheerful interdependence. For hundreds of thousands of audience members, Holbrook IS Twain.

He's 83 now, and slowing down in terms of the number of Twain shows he performs a year. Fresno is lucky to get the chance to see such a seasoned version.

An obituary ran Thursday in the Charlotte News & Observer. (No obituary ran in the Bee.) Minschew died on Oct. 1. The funeral is 2 p.m. Sunday in Wilson, N.C.

Here's a recap from his obit:

He graduated with honors from the University of North Carolina in 1961. Upon graduation, he received a national Fulbright scholarship for post graduate work to study 17th-century sculpture and painting at the Academy of Fine Arts, Rome, Italy. Returning to the United States, he became a professor at California State University in Fresno. His work has been exhibited in numerous one-man and group exhibitions and in more than one hundred private collections.

I last wrote about Minschew (shown above in a 2000 Bee photo by Tomas Ovalle) on the Beehive during CSU Summer Arts, when he sponsored a July 8 reception for the program's guest artists and instructors.

When he died, Minschew was working on a show titled "The Egypt Portfolio: Selected Prints," in conjunction with the Conference on Middle East Studies at Fresno State, which runs Oct. 16-18. A reception will be held the first night of the conference.

Because we love downtown Fresno, and we love when you show love to downtown Fresno, here's how you can be a total dowtowner on Saturday ...

1. Hit up the Yoshi Now! fall flea market. Yoshi Now! is, without a doubt, one of the most interesting places to shop in Fresno. And when it opens its parking lot for Fresnans to come sell whatever they want, the selection gets even more unpredictable. Add in four local bands performing, and it's a good first stop on your downtown Fresno adventure.

2. Go rock with the Fresno for Obama folks. I know this is a tough sell for you McCain-backers, but I assure you I'm throwing this out there because it's a cool music event, not because of the politics. A number of Fresno's top bands -- in numerous genres -- will be performing, including Rademacher, 40 Watt Hype and Three Bags Full. (If there's a similar McCain event in town, lemme know and I'll give it a shout out too).

In Friday's issue of 7 I have an interview with Janine Christl, director of the new Fresno City College production of "The Importance of Being Earnest." Here's a continuation of the interview:

What's your approach to this production?

I focused my attention on creating a real love story with twists and turns along the way. While Oscar Wilde definitely pokes fun at the assumptions we make about what love should provide, I think he also leaves us with a hopeful message that love is worth all the work it takes. As far as the acting approach, I worked with my cast on the "different levels of being." The level work is a way to describe the way we change depending on our environment and who we are around and what their expectations are, e.g., the character Gwendolyn will behave one way when she is responding to social expectations and another way when she finds her own voice and is comfortable with expressing her truth. The overall focus of the script may feel superficial, however I see the "Victorian melodrama" as only one part of the story. I find it interesting to counter the Victorian social conditioning with a truthful desire to find a meaningful connection with someone. So, I have directed a comedy of manners that comments on the absurd expectations in Victorian society and also delivers the real person caught up in the social beliefs of the period.

I know that you're very interested in the way that actors use their voices. How does your training and techniques come into play when you're directing a British period piece like this?

My vocal work consists of working toward authentic sound, so with our level work, we focused on the myriad of tones and qualities the voice has in various situations, e.g., how you talk to loved ones vs. how to talk at a job interview. Concerning dialect, I have a friend that lived in London for years who came in for a session with the actors, and also our own Linda Quinn worked with the cast on overall British sound substitutions. The cast seemed to adhere fairly quickly to the overall stylistic quality, and the text comes to life with the particulars of a British approach.

If you could magically transport Oscar Wilde to Fresno for the play's opening weekend, how do you think you'd entertain him? What would you show him in Fresno? What would you want to ask him?

I would definitely entertain Wilde by bringing him backstage to meet this dedicated cast and see the lighting, set-design, and beautifully handmade dresses. Chris Boltz has designed a non-traditional set and lighting-design with a flare that I believe Wilde would appreciate, and Debbi Shapazain has made some stunning dresses for the ladies. I think he would also be interested in some of our artistic choices for the show, which include a focus on the humorous asides and physical comedy; so I would encourage him to watch a rehearsal and give us some feedback. I would want to ask him what he would change if he were writing this play today and then, on a lighter note, see if he would like to go shoe-shopping with me. Lastly, we'd have to go to Veni Vidi Vici so that I could introduce him to the Tower District and a Stockholm martini!

The characters talk a lot about marriage in "Earnest." Was marriage at that time such a completely different institution than today that it's hard to relate? Or do some things never change?

Marriage is a primary focus in "Earnest..." and the gentlemen debate whether a proposal is "business" or "pleasure." Lady Bracknell adds, "An engagement should come on a young girl as a surprise, pleasant or unpleasant, as the case may be." The question of the nature and purpose of marriage continues throughout the show. I think that our thoughts on marriage have shifted greatly and that, for most, marriage is connected to pleasure. However, there are many social considerations still alive and kicking, and I think that most mothers (like Lady Bracknell) still have a list of questions prepared for their children's suitors.

Talk a little about your cast.

My cast is a combination of community theatre actors and student actors, which makes for a wonderful blend! We have had so much fun watching Mary Piona in the role of Lady Bracknell! In the role of Jack Worthing, we have a returning student who was in a couple of FCC shows last year, Fragino Kenn Arola. Other student actors include Sam Munger (Lane), Erik Armstrong (Merriman), and Jarod Caitlin (Algernon). We also have some FCC alumni including Ashley Hyatt (Cecily), Gabriela Lawson (Gwendolyn), and retired theatre instructor Tim Quinn (Rev. Chasuble). Lastly, community actress Lori Gambero plays the wacky Miss Prism, and recent CSU Fresno graduate, Miles Villaneuva, understudies the role of Algernon. My support staff (the people that keep me sane) include Jon Hollis (Assistant Director) and the wonderful Katie Simonsen (Stage Manager). Also, I want to mention that Jeff Barrett (sound-design) has found some decadent period music to set the tone.

Dear Guys,

Now that the stock market is crashing, the credit market is frozen, the housing market is in ruins, the banking system is on the verge of being nationalized and there's a real fear that the next Depression is right around the corner, I just wanted to say one thing:

Thanks for everything.

Remember those late-night discussions we'd have when you'd dream about your Armani suits and six-figure starting investment banker salaries and three-bedroom co-op apartments with a view? We'd all laugh about my possible future earnings with a journalism degree (a pittance compared to yours), and then I'd good-naturedly tear into you by declaring that a job that consists of moving little pots of money around all day (and skimming a healthy percentage off the top) might make some folks rich in the short term, but that in the long run a society built on greed isn't healthy. You'd laugh, call me naive and explain that nothing could be holier than amassing wealth -- because in the end, it makes us all richer. I'd interrupt to ask where it was written that CEOs should get paid such outrageous salaries, and I'll never forget your answer: "Because they can."

This was long before the sub-prime mortgage crisis, of course, but even back in the late 1980s, you'd dream of leveraged buyouts, tricky takeover bids and making a killing in the market. I would tell you that there's more to life than that -- such as doing something for a living that you really enjoy -- but you'd shrug me off. I would say that the true nobility in business it to be an entrepreneur -- to actually make something, to build a company, to provide jobs, to be a productive force in society. Not just move decimal points around. You'd smile and look at me like a chump.

Well, now, Wall Street is wallowing, and it's starting to look like the country is majorly screwed up. I realize that it isn't ALL your fault -- that there's always been plenty of greed to go around, and that investment bankers make convenient scapegoats. But it's only human to want to blame someone. You -- or at least my 20-year-old memory of you -- will fit the bill nicely. I'm just hoping you don't take the rest of us down with you.

Oh, and by the way: There's this great store that sells designer men's shoes for up to 75% off. It's called Nordstrom Rack. (Note: the Rack part is important. Don't wander into a regular Nordstrom by mistake.) You might want to check it out.

Speaking of "Saturday Night Live," NBC is giving the rejuvenated show (thanks to Fey's dead-on impersonation of Palin) some prime time love, starting tonight.

Olympic great Michael Phelps is still very popular.

And, finally, if you think the U.S. economy is tanking, have you heard what's happening in, of all places, Iceland?
