Why No Recent Stories on Utility Rates?

Why has the Bee done little or nothing to publicize the upcoming Council meeting about increased rates. Does the Bee know how many protest letters were received? If yes, why not let the public know?

Len Goldberg

City Hall reporter Matt Leedy has monitored the utility rates issue, including letters that have been submitted, since he reported on the proposed increase in mid- and late-November. Although The Bee has not yet published an in-depth follow-up, our plan is to do so before the next hearing, which is scheduled for Feb. 27. That coverage will include details on the public response to the proposed increases.

Also, on Feb. 5, reporter Brad Branan wrote about the City Council taking steps toward creating a utility district, which some council members say would provide better services to residents.

We understand how important this issue is to residents, and we will continue to look for opportunities to tell readers more about it.

What about late-night viewers?

I saved the portion of the paper that covered the introduction of the new TV and Cable Guide format, just to remember to ask this question: Why are the hours from midnight to 6 a.m. not included in full? Many people work alternative schedules and would like to be able to use the Guide like the rest of us do for the other 18 hours of each day.
Adding daily grids to cover that time frame would require the TV magazine to increase by at least seven pages, which would be a very expensive venture. Because TV viewership dramatically drops off after midnight, we don't believe the service we would provide to readers justifies that cost. Also, when making this decision, we took into consideration the fact that many stations go off the air, repeat earlier programming or air infomercials during the early-morning hours.

The TV magazine, however, does provide daily late-night highlights that provide some insight into late-night television.
