arrow Ryan Mathews: Partying, but not playing this weekend

mathewsbdaytome.JPG

UPDATE: David Boutte, the promoter of the party, got in touch with me last night and told me he's doing a recall on fliers because it's a violation of NCAA rules to use a player's likeness in this way. And we all know the Bulldogs don't need any more trouble, right?

Apparently one of the higher-ups at Fresno State saw this post and was like "On snap! We can't do that." Maybe not in those exact words, but ya know ...

ORIGINAL POST: The various tubs of the Interwebs are telling me that Ryan Mathews, the popular Fresno State running back who has been on the shelf since hurting his knee against UCLA, is having a big ol' My Super Sweet 21 birthday party this Saturday night at Aqua Shi.

Because who better to celebrate your birthday with than a bunch of strangers, fans and sushi eaters, right?

The sports guys at The Bee are saying Mathews won't play against Idaho either, which means he's too hurt to play, but not too hurt to party.

But maybe that looks better. You don't want the star running back out there getting sloshed for his 21st while he's in playing mode. Or maybe you do. This is Fresno State we're talking about. Who knows.

It'll be interesting to see when he shows up to his own party, though. Kickoff at Bulldog Stadium on Saturday night is 7 p.m. The party is supposed to start at 9 p.m.

You think Pat Hill will be there?

LOL, I just saw this on MySpace too! Freakin' Oz, you crack me up mank, I mean why can't a guy go out and party on his own birthday mank.

Look, this is Fresno State, athletes have been running things since the days of Dominick Young and Chris Herring! Shoot, I saw Dominick Young rollin' in a fat little ride the other day and I thought to myself, "How do guys like that make it."

Ryan Matthews is 21 and now he can go out and get hammered, legally get hammered, because all of those other times didn't count!

What does Pat Hill have to worry about, I mean it's not like Idaho is any better than Hawaii or anything. Our season is done with that one loss to Hawaii! Lord knows, I have a side bet on the fact we're going to lose at least four conference games this year and we're on our way...

RYAN - "Party it up, just make sure if you happen to take any sushi go'ers back to your pad for a little Aqua-Shi action do not, I repeat do not deliver any presents unwrapped"

Well, I hope his knee is good enough to take on all that dancing that DJ Paris is going to bring...(Who???)

So is this considered the biggest event in Fresno State's history?

Posted by: Michael at October 8, 2008 1:55 PM

okay, Mr Incognito, stop it, "mank"

and why cant he go out and party, Mike? I cannot skate due to knee injury but i will still proceed to get my "swerve on"(homage to Mr. I) at the bout and afterparty. Let the kid have some fun....even if he looks like a douche.

He can totally go out and party -- I ain't saying not to.

I'm just throwing some ideas out there and giving ya'll something to talk about.

Touche MsJoey, Touche... Ouch, though about the douche comment!

Truthfully, I doubt if any of us care one way or another what Ryan does; it's poor timing to actually post something up on a website, when you're supposed to be injured.

This is Fresno State once again and our athletes are not any different than the ones at USC, Florida State, Penn State, or even yep... San Jose State (I had to bro)! The present era of sports yeilds us stronger athletes, faster athletes, bigger athletes, and athletes without much sense... I'm not saying Ryan Matthews doesn't have any sense, because I don't know the guy, but I am saying his actions in this case aren't the best timed.

Travis and MsJoey have been placed into my Fav 5....

Posted by: Mr. Incognito at October 8, 2008 2:20 PM

*****

To be honest, (again) I don't really have a problem with the kid having a party for his birthday. I don't even have a problem with the timing. Maybe if it was a Friday night before a game ...

The truth is that pro athletes do stuff like this all the time and, for them, playing games is their job, so if they can do that and still get a paycheck, why can't a college kid. Sure, he's on scholarship, but that's still different than having a million dollar contact.

I just like the contrast of the downtrodden Fresno State fans who are still pissed about losing to Hawaii and acting like it's the end of the world, but here's the star running back having a party for himself ...

Dear Mike Oz,

What did you do for you 21st birthday? Did your mommy make you a cake and you blew out the candles and made a wish to be a psuedo-journalist who has nothing better to do than spread hate....Well looks like your wish came true.

Posted by: Tricia Mathews at October 9, 2008 2:52 PM

Mike: So WHAT if Ryan wants to go out? FYI...it's his BIRTHDAY! He didn't plan this party...and what...sounds like you are a little green because no one threw you a bash for your birthday. Please find something important to worry about not whether or not a kid gets something you probably never had.

Look four comments above you guys ...

Come on, ladies. "You're jealous because no one ever threw you a party"?

This is Mighty Mike Oz you're talking to. The man has had birthday parties at clubs and galleries all around Fresno.

And he's not begrudging your -- what? son? brother? -- a birthday party. He's just wondering why it's happening during a Fresno State game, for crying out loud.

Posted by: Heather at October 9, 2008 3:28 PM

*****

Yeah, Mike... looks like you're a little green buddy, I love the psuedo-journalist bit too! I guess she forgot that wishes are supposed to come true...

Maybe everyone should re-read your piece and then start again, Oh wait, you've already pointed out that you can care less about his party!

"A birthday bash"? Whoa... I think people are upset with you because it's Aqua-Shi and not Roe!

i was wondering when Ryan's groupies were going to show up to defend their man.

Posted by: mdub420 at October 9, 2008 3:47 PM

Heather, check it out...once again..Ryan did NOT plan this party (apparently like the great and wonderful Oz, who if you recall, was a little man behind a big curtain) he didn't even know about it until someone showed him the "ticket". And yes, I take offense to someone saying "he's too hurt to play, but not too hurt to party". Oh, and he's not my son OR my brother, but I'm proud to say he's like one.

Sallie, two things:

1. Man behind a curtain? My picture is right on the post, as it is in the newspaper. People know me.

2. "He's too hurt to play, but not too hurt to party." Which part is not true? It ain't no thing, really. Tom Brady is too hurt to play, but he's not too hurt to be doing whatever he does with Giselle. No hate for Mr. Brady, either.

Sallie, do you need a big group blog hug too?
Someone needs to turn that frown upside-down.
You didnt think we were gonna let you come on board and insult our Great and Powerful Oz, now did you?
Just settle down, head on over to aqua-shi and write another check to your "like-a-son" Ryan.
Is that how you boosters are referring to those boys now, "like-a-son"?

Sallie: I didn't say he planned the party. Nobody said he planned the party.

Just out of curiosity: Is he going to the party?

Posted by: Heather at October 9, 2008 4:34 PM

Ms Joey, not a booster a very good friend of the family. I am a fan of Ryan on and off the field. He's a great kid. And, as far as Aqua Shi, apparently your not in the know, cuz he's not even attending this party. And boy, I'm impressed, sounds like the great and powerful Oz really has a booster in you.

Posted by: Sallie at October 9, 2008 4:36 PM

*****

No, Sallie, I'm not in "in the know." I never even heard of Ryan Mathews until Mike Oz mentioned him on this blog yesterday. I can go the rest of my life and not give two s**ts if I ever hear of him again.

But I'll agree with you on this: If, in fact, this kid has no plans to attend a party in his honor during a football game he should attend even if he's not playing in it, then he does not deserve anyone's ire.

And you need to stop hating on Mike Oz for simply reporting a story because it makes you look far less intelligent than you probably are.

Posted by: Heather at October 9, 2008 4:47 PM

LOL!! somebody stole my name. i guess she is Ryan's mom.

Posted by: mdub420 at October 9, 2008 4:56 PM

oh sweet Heather, when did anyone ever say he wasnt going to attend the game? Not knowing facts makes you look far less intelligent that you probably are....well??

According to http://gobulldogs.cstv.com/sports/m-footbl/mtt/mathews_ryan00.html Tricia is Ryan's mom. I imagine it's probably yet another Beehive troll. If not that's pretty sad when you gotta have mommy defend you.

And I could care less about this party. I'm gonna go see me some derby grrls kick ass.

And Sally what the hell does "sounds like the great and powerful Oz really has a booster in you" mean? Are you saying Heather is rabid? Well I did see her foaming at the mouth once, but it was because someone mentioned Jim Halpert.

Posted by: Michael at October 9, 2008 4:59 PM

i think Ryan Matthews should go after the stupid muscle head who is using Ryan to promote a party that he's saying it's for Ryan, but Ryan's not attending, or didn't even know about. I would be ticked off. I hope the FSU higher up who saw this shameless promotion didn't fault Ryan since he wasn't part of it.

Posted by: mdub420 at October 9, 2008 5:01 PM

Heather...check who I was speaking to...it wasn't you. However, if you don't know Ryan, you don't give two s**ts about him, then why bother contributing your 2cents worth? I'm not hating on Mike, but he should check his fact prior to spewing information that is incorrect. That's all. And thanks for judging my intelligence, because your comments above do not even make sense...

Have a great night everyone and GO BULLDOGS!

Wait a second... I actually saw the party invite on MySpace so did someone hack into his MySpace profile, post a bulletin, and then turn around and call Oz? I'm lost... I've read all of these posts and they're all pretty funny!

No one dislikes Ryan, he's a pretty cool dude actually; the fact is people do key in on this whole perception thing. The beauty of it all is the fact that perception isn't truly reality!

Freakin' mdub420 has me both hungry and (AH...) hungry over here...

I actually thought Heatherisamoran was telling us that you were a morman "H"! I was like WHOA, that's interesting, I know she drinks "Diet Alcohol".

Anyway, funny reactions all around. I like Sallie (spunky)... "So Sallie, I was thinking, ah, if you're free I'd like to invite you to this party deal for Ryan Matthews, I heard a bunch of people are showing up and he might be there too"...

LOL Mr. Incognito...the party should actually be fun. AND, I am actually encouraging Ryan to go....but to be prepared for all the backlash. A kid only turns 21 once after all. We'll see what he does. (BTW, today is his actual bday, but as we all know, he's locked up in the hotel for the day/night)... I just hope if he and his brother do decide to go, everyone gives him a break. And if he does go, I'll be the first in line to buy him a drink..

Everyone enjoy the game...of life...

Posted by: Sallie at October 10, 2008 2:20 PM

Forget buying him a drink, I'll have one delivered to their room tonight. Is it still a secret where they stay the night before the game? Oh well, I'll keep that little one under my cap if it is...

I'm sure the party is going to be fun, shoot all the attention it's receiving is free advertisement for the event!

If you actually do go, I'll be the guys wearing a giant "S" on the front of my shirt for Sallie and my hat will have "INCOGNITO" written across it... Just joking, I'm going to Vivianna's and Juliessa's(?) birthday party that Oz put on blast, it looks like there will be more skin at that party!

I just added you to my Fav 5, yesterday and I get this today (LOL)! Check it, maybe we should just blog on every topic that any of these guys and gals post... We'll then post a flier on MySpace, maybe with you face because I'm sure you can draw more men than I can (Whoa, that was an odd statement)!

Shoot, I got it, we can create a BLOG BASH being held over at the Fresno Bee and maybe our boy Bruno "The Hostess With The Mostess" from Mike's blog about bad fliers will join us and maybe he'll bring DJ Paris from Ryan Matthews psuedo-party, quasi-attendence party thing a ma bopper...

Eff you have any questions I'll be bloggin' all next week, same site, same channel.

Have a great weekend ALL!

Wow, this blog has more comments than any other on this board - I guess the saying is true as long as people are talking about you they are making you famous! Go Ryan have a party live it up - Heck I think I will even stop by just so I can see what the fuss is all about - He's got the whole town in an uproar!

Posted by: flagflyingsob at October 10, 2008 7:58 PM

Well..I AM related to Ryan and I stopped reading the comments after about the tenth one, so maybe someone else has said it already, but there is no way on God's green earth that Ryan wouldn't be at the game even if he is hurt. I haven't talked to him about the party, but I did talk to him this morning(today is his birthday)and he is ready to play. If he doesn't, it won't be his decision.

He is coming to grips with the fact that being in the limelight has its drawbacks, like people who have never met you talking crap to get a little airtime(blogtime?). Sometimes a writer has an axe to grind(I do not believe that is the case here), sometimes they want some of the limelight without having to work hard to get it(without knowing the writer here, I have no idea if that is the case), but whatever the motivation, it can be harmful if not nipped in the bud(not nipped in the butt, as so commonly misspoken). Ryan is FAR too private to make an issue of this so I was glad to see some come to his defense. When I was first informed of this blog, I meant to come rip into someone with my many years of journalistic experience and command of the english language, but after reading it myself, it seems more like misinformation and speculation than malicious journalism, so I don't see the necessity.

As has been stated previously, he neither planned nor knew about this party and once the promoter got wind of the possible ramifications, the aspect of the whole thing changed very rapidly. Good for him! I happen to know the man wants to see Ryan succeed more than he wants to see his club full for one night.

In any case, I am glad I am kin, glad I am a fan( I don't qualify as a groupie because I don't get the chance to see my beloved grandson much), and am quite content to ride his bandwagon wherever it takes him, no matter how high or low it goes!

Go Ryan! Happy Birthday, Son! My turn to buy!

Well, I'm not so sure of that, Al. It sounds like Motopoet59 brings up some good food for thought. This tidbit came up during a previous post — "He's too hurt to play, but not too hurt to party." Which part is not true?
Well, from the looks of things, one part of that equation is false. Perhaps both statements are false.
Of course blogs are meant to be fun, and give people an outlet for commentary or creativity. But maybe the discussion should shift to the fact that blogs can also convey information that could be harmful to another person. And if that information turns out to be false, what then?

Posted by: Beehive Guest at October 13, 2008 7:57 AM

*****

(First off, Ghost of Al Radka, followed by Beehive guest ... geez, we got Famous crowd on this one)

Beehive Guest:

I don't think anything here is harmful to Ryan Mathews. The use of likeness on the flier might have been, had it gotten him suspended for a game or two, but that wasn't my doing. I was just bringing it to light.

Beyond that -- it says he wasn't going to play and he did. Yes, on Monday, that's wrong. But when you're talking about football, a lot can change between Wednesday and Saturday.

Donald Munro likes to talk about how blogs are moments frozen in time -- I think this is an example of that.

When I wrote this, the party was happening and the flier was circulating. When I wrote this, I asked our Fresno State football reporter whether Mathews was going to play on Saturday. He said "No."

Obviously, things changed. Mathews played. And that happens all the time in football -- the status of a player can be upgraded or downgraded each day.

As for the party, that changed too. But not because we were wrong, but because it wasn't allowable and we brought that to light.

Had I not posted this, had Fresno State not found about it and had the athletic department not had to report it as an NCAA violation, then maybe the party would have gone on ...

Maybe he would have played and partied. Maybe he would have done neither.

Point is, on Wednesday, what I wrote was what was happening.
