This movie seems a little short
While I was in Los Angeles Saturday to do interviews for the movie 'Tropic Thunder," I got to see the first 38 minutes of the new big screen thriller "Eagle Eye." The DreamWorks film, starring actor-turned-stunt drive Shia LaBeouf, won't hit theaters until Sept. 26. But the studio is excited about the project. That was the reason for the sneak peek.
Movie studios are very strict as to when reviews of movies can open. The reviews are supposed to be embargoed until the day the movie opens. There's the story of one blogger who saw "The Dark Knight" early and raved about it online. Despite being a rave, the studio made the blogger remove the review.
So don't expect a review of "Eagle Eye" until late September. But there are a few things I can say.
First, even if I wanted to review the movie, there is no way to talk about it by only seeing 38 minutes. What the studio showed looked like this release could be "The Bourne Identity" meets "Enemy of the State." But starting with minute 39 the action could shift to the future where Chihuahuas rule the world and they worship Paris Hilton. The whole project needs to be seen.
There is a chase sequence in the opening moments that features Shia LaBeouf and Michelle Monaghan. The high-speed scene results in numerous car crashes. Considering LaBeouf's recent driving disaster, the scene plays a little weird. At least Monaghan is driving.
And speaking of Monaghan, she may be the best kept secret in Hollywood. She's been in films like "Gone Baby Gone," "Mission Impossible III" and "The Bourne Supremacy" but is one of those actresses people can better identify by her résumé than her name.
One more thing about car crashes. It has been suggested the rapid box office success of "The Dark Knight" has come at a price. There was Heath Ledger's death, Christian Bale's run in with the law and now Morgan Freeman's car accident. Don't you think if there had been a curse it would have been on the latest "Mummy" movie? Someone had to make a deal with the Devil to get that film made.
