arrow Naked women showering on the streets of Fresno

UPDATE 8/5: They were in San Francisco on Tuesday. (photos)

ANOTHER UPDATE: ABC 30's video shows me looking like a perv. (more on this at bottom of post)

Here's my video report:

8/4: On Monday, at the southeast corner of Shaw and Blackstone Avenues in Fresno, there was a PETA protest. The main argument was an environmental one: that forgoing meat saves water.

In the video above you can see that public "nudity" always seems to attract interesting people.

Here are some photos of the protest:

My favorites are the people who either rolled by ever so slowly, or even came into the parking lot and hung out for a bit.

(Granted, I can't say much, because -- as ABC 30 shows -- I was out there, too.)

*** Quick rant on ABC 30: Maybe if they had stayed for longer than five minutes (is this what people mean by drive-by media?), they would have seen my press credentials. But hey, I guess I'm part of the story in their world. Come to think of it, I did meet a woman who claimed to be a reporter for a local news station. But I don't know if she was from ABC 30 because I don't watch local news (now I know why).

This is just my opinion (which I know carries a lot of weight on here) but if God wanted us to be vegetarians, he wouldn't have made cows out of meat.

And those two girls have it all wrong, they need to be wearing clear heels.

There were naked girls in the video? Sorry, I couldn't concentrate with that infernal beeping from those Shaw/Blackstone crosswalks! (NawIseendeemandtheylooknicebutIlovememycarnelookatmeFAIL)

I still don't get how objectifying women saves animals.

Were they able to objectify themselves to the tune of 14 million dollars from People Magazine for a couple of shower pics? Then they could've donated the money to PETA....
---doggone, it's a morally complicated world and good ol' publicity stunts meet performance art has always been difficult since John and Yoko invited the press into their bed for peace. And somebody's always gonna bust yer buns for something no matter what your motivation truly is.

[truly off-track question:
Y'all remember the PowerPuff Girls spoof on the john n' yoko bed-in where Mojo Jojo and Moko Jono do "Agitation Piece #9"? They called themselves 'performance criminals'--I thought it was pretty funny.]

...whoah (re: blog formatting) that's a LOT of empty white space (insert your clovis joke here.)

(will)
'...now that you're watching them right now, what do you think.'
(guy 1)
'...they look good to me, looks nice, and cool
(will)
'...is watching this demonstration going to change your mind?'
(guy1 )
'...I love my meat.'

(eyebrows hit ceiling)

Then this poor sunbeaten guy who's been reduced to pahandling,
mind pretty much blown, loosing business,
'...this tells me to take a shower.'

Finally, the pizza de resistance

(guy 2)
'...You guys got any clothes on back there?'

(Enviro-Barbie)
'...What is MORE important is:
-blah-bleh blah-fact-fact, magazine, blah-bleh,(smile)blah-bleh, blah(blink smile) blah...'

----meantime, bombshell twenty-something coeds are taking a camp shower TOGETHER behind a flimsy banner, in heels.---

(guy2)(unphased, undeterred)
'...I already KNOW that, what I want to know is, are they NAKED?'

Then we're told that eating fish is evil...

Will: nobody can write stuff this good,
we're talking major documentary material here, just keep the camera's rolling,
but be prepared to be run out of town one day...

What's interesting is the location: (Shaw/Blackstone)

-Why not 'Ashlan/Blackstone?'
-the hookers won't put up with the competition.

-Why not 'Fulton Mall Free Speech Platform'?
-they didn't want to get raped,(besides, it's surrounded by courtrooms.)

-Why not 'Clovis'?
-they didn't want to be burned at the steak, er, stake.

-Why not 'Fig Garden'?
-They already have a 'Whole Foods there,' and all the people were plenty naked in the sixties (who now have money) are NOT going to be phased by people getting naked now.

-Why not 'Riverpark or NE?'
-well, you don't want to get thrown in JAIL nine seconds after starting,
you want to make a POINT, which is..

um...

?

PS: (Guy 2?)
2:27 to 2:29 there's your answer...
(though: I'm thinking body stocking... nobody's THAT crazy.)

So many comments, so little time.

My fave pic is the Dad HUSTLING his young sons along before they get a chance for an up-look at the shower girls.

HMac, PETA's been using objectified nude women for years cuz hey, it garners attention. Wanna have the most-read blog in the universe? Blog nude and let us watch.

What I don't get is not ONE person did an upshot or hold those cel phones high for a photo?? Er, I mean, not one person decided to give up their meat habit?

Actually, I think it's a fair protest and a cute idea, and I personally had NO idea it takes that much water to make 1 pound of meat, but I guess they're adding up all the gallons of water a cow drinks in it's lifetime prior to slaughter, as well as the water breaks taken by the workers who process the meat.

I dunno...converting even 500 people isn't going to substantially change the supply/demand for beef, is it?

It takes far more water to grow vegetables.

Yeah but veggies don't have a feelings and aren't adorable.

I don't know Dee. Seems to me that pound for pound, it would take less water to grow vegetables than beef cattle. I mean, think how much a pound of carrots is and then think about growing that one pound in your garden. I don't think you're going to use 6 months worth of shower water to grow those carrots.

I just think it was hilarious that they were talking about eating meat wasting water but they were standing on a SIDEWALK taking a shower? And so close to the pretty dehydrated flowers.

On a side note, if we stopped killing cows for meat, then the cows would reproduce without a natural predator. In that case, there would be more cows and they would drink MORE water. The only way to prevent that would be to expose them to predators which would not be very humane because we bred any kind of defenses right out of them. Or I suppose we could just let them go wander in the desert until they died so they would not drink up our water but that just does not seem very humane. Maybe if we just killed all of the cows off at once and ate only meat for a while then we could liberate our world from the burden of cows stealing our water. Unless we want to just deny cows the right to procreate altogether. Hmm. I wish I had been there. This would have been a fun conversation to have with some chick while she's showering.

I don't know about quitting meat but at the very least I need to go take a cold shower now.

Will, without your dedication to journalism I would never have seen that inspirational video and those umm moving pictures.

@Heather..."I still don't get how objectifying women saves animals."

PETA stands for People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals. Next week the organization CETW will protest the shower demonstration (Cows for the Ethical Treatment of Women).

PETA has made it quite clear that animal rights supersede women's right...unless they are also demonstrating a woman's right to be objectified.

I get it. It was a multi-level protest which draws a connected line through history. In order to save cows these women had to exercise their right to be naked. In essence the presence of naked women showering is really a testament to earlier civil rights victories. If we follow this true path back through history then we can see that the Emancipation Proclamation was really about cows.

It's time to search for "Cows with Guns" on YouTube and pick up a new copy of Animal Farm!!!

Will,

This is BRILLIANT! I'd like to point out the following players in this video:

1. Security Guy - This character is being played by the guy you saw last night checking ID's at the bar. His role is to not give a flyin' care about what these girls are saying, only what they're doing behind the shower curtain. He's meant to appear interested but not overly interested to the point of being too much of a weirdo.

2. Pan Handler Guy - This role is to be filled by a shaggy looking "Crazy Eye Killa" (Curb Your Enthusiasm episode), white man between the age of 45 - 55. His role is meant to be annoyed with the situation on HIS CORNER; not oblivious to the fact there are beautiful women on HIS CORNER, taking HIS MONEY. "I mean they're only naked, I'm broke", type of attitude! Apperance in video will be limited but very critical in proving that not everyone is interested in naked women.

3. Wheelchair Guy - This individual is meant to suddenly appear, almost shown rolling up on the scene. Character isn't meant to say too much...

4. Old Man Mysteriously Walkin' By Guy - This person is meant to look sort of like Wilford Brimley (Quaker Oats guy). His appearance is KEY because at 2:26 in this film you get a quick shot of a "BOTTOM" right over the shoulder of the main lady speaking... (Right Jim, most people won't remember the woman in the black dress)...

5. Biker Guy - Just a pure PIMP, "Shoot, if you let me in there, I'll become a vegetarian"!

SOLID....!

Why do all of your pictures show men with cameras and blank stares? You're right, nudity turns most people into flesh craving zombies...

What was this article about again?

Great piece WILL, great piece!!!!

It works. I may not become a vegetarian but the gentle protest is a memorable one which people will talk about for days and days. PETA gets the word out.

will,
about your update re: ch 30

did they capture the story? did they accurately state the facts of the peta protest there?

if so, how long did they need to stay there? did they need to be there the whole time to get the story?

or are you just upset because you look pervy in the video?

perhaps you feel it was your story being stolen? well, my friend, famous covered the story...a year ago. i know, i took pictures for it.

I'll shower naked, barely covered by signs, on the street, for a lifetime supply of hamburgers...

I think that is a MUCH more worthy cause for nakedness. Actually, I can think of several better reasons for nakedness. Er, public nakedness, I mean. (That other thing is probably a given.)

How about a lifetime supply of hamburgers for the homeless, you know, in the form of more support for already established programs to feed those who need it? Hamburgers, vegetables, whatever... Just feed 'em. I think people are more important than cows. I can't care about animals when I know there are people without a place to live who don't know when, or even if, they'll eat again. (I'm not that far away from being one of them.)

Hmm... there's a new charity event brewing here, somehow... Showering for poverty... or something.

And I could wear really hot shoes. I have a bunch.

"I didn't claw my way to the top of the food chain to be a vegetarian."
