It's the economy ... and it's stupid
With apologies to James Carville (The Bee apologized to Ben Franklin, but The Beehive is a little more current, y'know?), no one is having a good time right now.
So on Sunday, we here at the paper ran a series of stories (on such angles as transportation, food, debt, extra income, health and entertainment) to explore the issue further.
As part of the online coverage, I went out last Thursday (on the hottest day of the year) to ask people how they're coping with these tough times. Here's the video:

maybe i'm just some sort of jerk, but i'm buying a house. and i go out to eat. and i'm about to fly across country for a friends bachelor party weekend and then again in a month for the wedding. and i go to fuego, grizzlies, and rollerderby matches.
and i've managed to do all this without being rich.
it's a small house.
i used up all my miles to get a plane ticket.
i sit in the cheap seats or buy tix in advance to save.
i guess it comes down to priorities. i'm not saying we're not in a recession, because it sure seems like we are. or that i'm doing things better than others. i just think that people are still spending money on the things they want.

travelling almost everywhere by bike (in summer....uggggh....awful, but it must be done)
we're actually growing vegetables at home...
stocking up on food before the prices go up...
not using A/C....

I'll be using that first guy's skin to make my new leather boots.
That's conserving, right?

i dunno, stephen ... ed's a tough dude. unlike me, he did well in the blogger olympics. he may not be saving money, but it doesn't mean he's too poor to crane kick your face.

will,
thanks for the vote of confidence in my toughness. however, i don't think i'll be crane kicking anyone. even if i have met stephen and know that my foot would go that high. and boots from my skin? creepy, yes. practical, no. i've got pretty soft skin. white collar and all, you know. and all the time i spend in the blogsphere isn't exactly gave me rough skin.
btw, this weekend i spent money on:
dinner out
some drinks
a little dancing @ the this charming band show (there were people @ the show from both la & sf)
a movie
it didn't look like too many were saving money @ the theater. dark night was packed, and the lines @ the concession stand were long.
again, totally think we're in a recession, but people are still spending $ on what they like. i just think we like to complain and pretend that we're not spending.
like, the gas prices are high. people complain. they say they're going to drive less. and then there they are, trip to the store. trip to their friend's place. oh, forgot something. another trip to the store. in their suv.
