I still haven't seen "Mamma Mia"
Tell me why I should. I gotta say, I am interested after seeing this trailer:
Oh, hi, Will here. Big musical fan confessing to not seeing "Mamma Mia." It debuted on the West End in 1999 during the semester I was studying in London. I saw countless shows that spring (was studying theater, btw), but I neglected to see the big new show "Mamma Mia" because I didn't care to see a musical based around previously recorded pop songs.
Had a similar reaction after seeing "Moulin Rouge" for the first time: "No plot, one long music video ... wow, Ewan McGregor can sing."
But I've changed. I now see the brilliance of Baz Luhrmann's vision. My wife and I even shared our first dance at our wedding to McGregor's rendition of "Your Song." And I've always kinda dug the tune "Dancing Queen."
So, like peace, just when I'm willing to give the new movie version of this pseudo-musical a chance, my fellow musical-loving blogger Donald writes that it's a mediocre piece of crap.
Did you see it yet? I'd love to get your thoughts.

Comments:

Will, I'd take this approach: Hollywood doesn't make many movie musicals, so if you're a fan, it's almost like you have to see each one just to keep on top of the body of work. I still think I'd rather go to a mediocre "Mamma Mia" than a mediocre action movie/romantic comedy/dorky thriller. Even though I'm disappointed that they gave this movie to a rookie movie director, there are still parts of the movie that deliver feel-good fun. And you'll still walk out of the theater humming ABBA songs for days.

oh, yeah ... already there, donald. random times, at least four or five times a day, i'm singing OUT-LOUD the Mamma Mia title track. and i own zero ABBA CDs ... this is all based on the damn commercials on tv.

You should see Mamma Mia. I have seen it three times. yes, three seperate times. the weird thing is this is not the greatest movie ever, and i am not a HUGE ABBA fan (i have only heard songs from the Gold album and not even all of them), but it is a fun, cheesy, glittery film. a fun movie to make you laugh and get songs stuck in your head. and yes, Pierce does not sing great. but a few of the actresses do. but, if you can't take more than three men in speedos or tight short bathing suits, skip it.
