arrow Five Things You Should Do This Week ...

MuccaPazzaposter.jpg

.. other than checking out the Bartender Battle, the Mayhem Festival and The Stone Foxes -- all going down tonight, btw.

1. Have you ever seen a 32-piece live band perform at a nightclub?

Exactly, that's why this one is worth the trip to Visalia.

Mucca Pazza, a "circus punk marching band" that hails from Chicago is playing at The Cellar Door. All 32 of them. With uniforms, cheerleaders and everything.

Wild, right?

In addition, the show has one of the cooler fliers I've seen in a while.

2. Remember twin brothers Sean and Justin Richey, stars of the Buchanan Jazz Band and soon-to-be prestigious collegiate music scholars? They're playing a farewell-to-Fresno show at Tokyo Garden on Wednesday with some Buchanan friends under the guise of The Tokyo Quartet.

In addition, you'll hear more great local jazz from Three Bags Full and Protean Visions. It's also a farewell of sorts of Protean Visions, who has two members leaving Fresno for higher education out of state.

3. A good pre-party if you're going to Tokyo is the HiS Magazine release party at Aqua Shi. If you're not going to Tokyo, then it's just a good party by itself. These things are often packed and are a good place to be seen, if that's your scene.

4. Kiss Country is having another of its popular summer concerts on Thursday, turning Woodward Park into "American Idol" castaway central. Josh Gracin and Phil Stacey headline the concert. Apparently, Bucky Covington couldn't get the day off from Autozone.

I kid, I kid -- Bucky works at Pep Boys.

5. You know DJ Felli Fel -- the guy who has that "Finer Things" song with Kanye West, Fabolous and Jermaine Dupri? Well, none of them are coming here, but Felli Fel is. He's spinning at Bliss on Thursday night. Note to Felli Fel: You need to check the dress code, homie -- because I'm pretty sure hoodies and backward hats are not "tolerated" at Bliss.

Another good option for Thursday is Flight 409 with A Change of Pace at The Exit! Don't miss your chance to see Flight play a solid rock show here in town before they take off on tour in September!

...great... what looks like a killer band down in visalia (totally loving the illustration as well, (very) peter max, r. crumb, don martin kind of thing going on there...)

-and-

an astonishing line up of jazz work at tokyo (who hopefully will be 'kind,' in the sound mixing department.)

two places at once... two places at once... (lessee how fast can the Jetta go?)

@WT: You might be able to get to both. Jazz starts at 6:30. Stay there until 9, then head off to Visalia, where you can arrive by 9:45 or 10, which I'm sure will be good enough. Then you can rest up for Felli Fell at Bliss.

@Danielle: Thanks for the Flight 409 mention. That should also be a good one.

Oz:
-hm... dat may work... (cept Tokyo always start their shows late... (maybe this once...)

...And Felli Fell at Bliss:
(--and, golly, it's right across the street from me too!..)
SOOOOOOO tempting...
(and as you and I both know:
I am so DOWN with that...
dawg...'
(makes obscure gang-hand signs, accidently requiring intervention of physical therapist...)

(If I make Mucca, I'll let you know how it goes... I still owe you big time for Avett Bro's heads up...)

I suppose, ed, I should have specified that I just meant the weekdays. I'm planning to drop another one of these on Friday (or maybe Thursday) for the weekend.

And yeah, This Charming Band is a good choice.

Oh, and I love all the Bliss chatter. Just mentioning Bliss on here brings up hate.

...awwwww, c'mon...

I don't HATE 'Bliss,' (I mean, not in the purest sense of the word, like I HATE hypocracy, self-destructive behaviors, child-trafficking, radio-active-chemical waste, and (nearly all) BonJovi and John Mayer...

No... it's not like that... (even then radioactive chems have their place, I mean, I was raised in 'Jersey, and glowing in the dark is sort of fun sometimes.)

Nah...
it's just that the place is kind of, um, I dunno...
It just doesn't seem to make SENSE...
I mean, WHY do people go there?,
spend a ton of money, look at pretty lights, go through a grid of police
--and then just hang out in a parking lot way over dressed?
(...is the music all that good?
Are these mixers worth the hype?
does it have an identifiable crowd?
or just a bunch of folks 'representin'
(...representin..?')

-like this is Detroit?

-Dude, it's First and Shaw in FRESNO,
across the street from shopping mall and it shares a parking lot with a Denny's...

The meanest toughest B.A. rappers could show up all bling'd out and throw down beats to sterilize a frog at 300 yards,
-and some old guy would come shuffling past with a walker, turn down his hearing aid and be like '...why???'

-and he'd be right.

Those "castaways," as you called Josh Gracin and Phil Stacey, have done pretty well for themselves, thank you. I am specifically a fan of Phil's, but I think they both, and the one who you say works at Pep Boys, rock. And for me, no one that has gone through the grueling process at American Idol is a "castaway" or a "loser," as some called them. They are "finalists," or is that too hard for you to say? At least one blogger was smart enough to call them the "Lyric Street Triple Threat."

I'll say it again for Blake and the Catz: This was intended as a list of things that ends at Thursday. I'll drop a new "Five Things ..." before the weekend.

Thanks for promoing your stuff, though.

And as for CFPhilfan ... I'm sorry to say that I don't even respect the winner of American Idol (Underwood excluded), so I'm not about to go ga-ga for a couple castaways from that horrible show.

Well I respect the finalist's and winner's from American Idol especially Mr. "Pep Boy" himself, Bucky Covington. It doesn't matter how he got into the music business, the key is to stay popular and that is just what Bucky is doing. Two Top 10 singles and one climbing right now. Pretty good track record I say.
