arrow Beehive Obsessions: Volume 2

black_kids-partie-traumatic-album_art.jpg

You know how it is when you find something you love and you instantly want everyone you know to love it, too?

Here is a random list of things we at the Beehive are totally into at this very moment: some new, some not-so-new. We invite you to share your obsession in the comments.

Mike Oz: "If you would have asked last week it was The Ting Tings, but this week that peppy, poppy place in my heart has been taken over by The Black Kids. So what if Pitchfork hates them now, I think the Jacksonville band's new CD "Partie Traumatic" is a whole lot of fun. Loaded with '80s influenced indie rock, it's got some slithery, sexy songs like "Hurriane Jane" and "Listen to Your Body" next to synthed-up sing-alongs like "I Wanna Be Your Limousine" and "Look at Me (When I Rock Wichoo)."

Felicia: "Ever since I saw recent photos of Victoria Beckham and Heidi Klum in baggy jeans, I've wanted a pair. It's such a welcome change to the skinny jeans that designers have decreed women sausage-squeeze their way into for the past couple of years. My problem is that I can't find any specifically made for women (you know, with a waistline that hangs at the hips) so I've had to settle for a $20 pair of men's Levi's "Signature" loose relaxed fit jeans from Target, in the smallest size I could find.

"Does anyone out there know where I can find baggy jeans for women?"

Donald: "I'm obsessed with Albert Einstein right now. I'm listening to an 18-CD biography on him. He was a fascinating guy: not just the science stuff, but also his amazing personal life as well. (Did you know that he had a daughter that he never met and that no one really knows what happened to? And that he fell in love with his first cousin?) I love the fact that he had a devil of a time getting his dissertation published, and he worked for years in a Swiss patent office because no one would give him a job as a professor. After he became famous, it would have been weird to have been known as the department head who refused to hire Einstein. I'm up to his general theory of relativity now -- and am actually understanding some of the basic quantum physics concepts. Wish me luck."

Will: "My favorite show right now is "Swingtown," which for some mysterious reason Beehiver Rick Bentley thinks should be off the air. I find myself just smiling at all the characters, which have enough depth to completely change how I feel about each of them just a few episodes into the summer season. I just think it's a smart, well-written drama series. It stars the beautiful Molly Parker (love Mary Louise, Parker Lewis, the Grizzlies mascot -- you name a Parker, I'm a fan) and the dude from BBC's "Coupling" as the newly open-minded couple that is leaving the pinochle crowd for the folks who have parties in their basement. Check it out."

Heather: "I'm obsessed with McDonald's Caramel Iced Coffee – the breakfast of champions. I get the medium size (comes to $2.04 with tax) because the large, which is only 20¢ more, is a bucket and I can't finish it. Liquid crack for half the price of iced drinks sold at that ridiculous coffee chain that appears to be getting its comeuppance. Plus, when I'm really hungover hungry, I can get one of those greasy hash brown patties for a buck more.

"I'm also obsessed with swimming. Those iced coffees and hash browns don't work themselves off, unfortch."

Your turn. What are you totally obsessed with right now?

I know that I'm totally like a year late on this. But I'm obsessed recently with Swedish pop singer Robyn and her poptastic cover of "Cobrastyle," originally done a few years ago by the excellent (and also Swedish!) pop/funk band The Teddybears. This is pure candy.

This is not a shameless plug, but Chameleon Chicken and Waffles. I have not eaten there yet, but everything I know about it scream wonderful.

Japanesetabi. They're perfect for when you're needing to sneak around all ninja-like. Or, when you're practicing Aikido like me.

Rogue's (who sould totally sponsor the Rogue Festival) Morimoto Soba Ale. Rogue, best know for its Dead Guy Ale, brews a whole lotta goodness. This is my momentary fave.

I'm obsessed with "Hoops" (Nicole Alexander?). I first fell hopelessly in love with her on Flavor of Love I and now that she's on I Love Money... the flame has rekindled. I wonder if she likes poorly aging small time musicians who are vaguely shaped like Shrek? A boy can only hope...

Maybe it's cause I've been working on one, but I've been obsessed with swedes lately. I'm always on youtube looking for new ones to see how people are doing them. And I have a list of like 20 I want to do as well as around 3 in pre production. Now I just need actors damnit.

That and I'm starting to collect rockabilly music. I'm a huge fan of Social Distortion and have started to listen to what inspired Mike Ness. Don't really have much now, if anyone has any suggestions hit me with an e-mail.

HMac I envy you. I could so use a margarita right now.

On the topic of jeans, if you are bigger than a size 2, baggy jeans will just make you look like the Goodyear blimp. The easy solution is for fat girls to get to be a size 2 or smaller so that they can be acceptable members of society and not just be a statistic of US Obesity which is out of control.
Is it really that hard to show some self control in your eating habits so you don't have a BMI of 80? Really just revolting.
The best solution for girls bigger than a size 2 is to just stay inside their house all day with the shades closed so they can't harm society any more than they already have.

there are plenty of TALL slender women who wear an 8......and JEANS DON'T HAVE TO BE SKIN TIGHT...fashion is fickle, baggy jeans are chic and comfortable...and no one must stay in their house all day...Personally, most women who look like Goodyear blimps opt for polyester or dresses....

I'm really reticent about admiting my newest obsession, which involves going to Heroes and seeing if the latest of this series of graphic novels depicting the story of The(Marvel Super Hero) Avengers as if it happened in today's world rather than back in the early 60's when Marvel was inventing this stuff.

I'm shy because I'm over 38 and going to the comic store, which, as was pointed out in a post a day or so ago, is questionable behaviour.

And NOW, I'm all worried that I wouldn't fit into a size 2 and I don't know my BMI.

But seriously folks, the comic is called The Ultimates, and it's very very intense.

True Ginger. How fat girls who wear those spandex or polyester type "pants" with the elastic waistband are free to roam the streets like regular sized humans is beyond me. The obesity epidemic is totally out of control in the United States. If you travel to other parts of the world there aren't the abundance of fat slob women who would rather stuff their face with food and sit on their fat butt watching tv, than be a normal member of society. It always blows me away that fat girls actually leave their house though. Whenever I see one, I just make sure that I scowl and shake my head at them to show my disgust. Everyone should do the same.

Jen let us know what you look like so we can give you the scowl you so deserve.

Your life must be perfect if you have the time to degrade and insult others that most likely have done nothing to you.

Wow, I wonder what sad little lives the chubby haters have. Either some little girls are bored on summer vay-cay or someone thinks she's being witty and is failing miserably. Girls, life is too short to hate on anyone who isn't hurting YOU. Move on, you'll find life much more fulfilling. I stopped hating on size 2's for being anorexics a long time ago ( See, how that works. *I* know not all skinny women are anorexic.). Then again, such wisdom comes with maturity and empathy. Good luck with that.

Felicia, I am obsessed with the wide-leg pants. Love them. They make me look put together and tall. And... (gasp) I'm a size 16 and look faboo! in them. The trick is to make sure they're fitted in the waist and hips, or it just looks bulky ( especially if you're trying to belt them up). Get them tailored. Gap has some great wide leg jeans... if you get them a size too big and take them to a good tailor just to have the waist fitted, you'll achieve what you're looking for.

-Dr. Bronners Peppermint Castile Bar Soap (I might have mentioned this before... it's great stuff.)

-Vacuuming... no, make that 'cleaning in general' --I've got a ton of projects that I'm wrapping up, and I feel a major 'gut the house, finish unpacking from the great migration west (of FAll '05) coming on before school starts.

-Specific parts of certain songs:
-Queensryche: 'Silent Lucidity,' --just as they're wrapping it up and it's all 'full orchestral and choral.'
-Rasberry JAM: Oceanic: 'Easter''Easter''the Ocean'

-Brussels Sprouts (with butter and salt)

-keepin' the buzz to a '2' and the beard to a '1' (you people just have it too dang hot out here, I thought you were just going through a phase for the first two years, but I'm now realizing ya'll have serious issues.)

-The outside cat that I had, that got taken out by two pitbulls? (yeah, nice kids in the neighborhood)
well,
seems he and the 'girlfriend' kitty had a romantic evening sometime prior,
--I now have two small kittens (with their mamma) living on the back porch,(oorah!)
--and they are hysterical to watch,
(it's like having two 8inch tall professional wrestlers back there all the time.)

-Jib-Jab (thanks Felicia)

(And) I also wear baggy pants, have a sizable arse,
-but I found that it's the tool belt and yankees cap that really makes it all come together...
(and when it comes to BMI?
-I just say BBQ.

Remember: Big people are harder to kidnap.

I'm addicted to Friday lunches with one of my favorite relatives. Those margaritas really hit the spot. Hopefully this can be done on a regular basis.

Hey C1, thanks for the suggestion on the wide leg pants.

As for Jen, I'm not sure what launched that tirade. I'm not a size 2, but I consider myself in fairly good shape. I'm just trying to find a baggy pair of jeans, and she turned it into a rant session on overweight gals. Why bring such negativity into what was supposed to be a fun idea from my gal pal, Heather?

Blueberries and walnuts. The blueberries are in season, and they are at their magnificent best!

Sunday Baroque on KVPR 89.3 FM (10 a.m. to Noon). I never miss it.

Trader Joe's 73% organic dark chocolate. Just one small square a day never hurts.

My new haircut. Haven't cut my hair in two years, and boy does it feel cooler.

The horses, roosters and patio wind chime outside my kitchen window. Quite the morning chorus!

Recently returned from Europe; England, France, Italy...people looks the same..(all sizes and shapes)..except over there people walk a lot more and wear less makeup......so better legs..witnessed a few baggy & tight jeans..many more adorable sundresses.....SO...how bout the shoulders & upper arms? flaunted or hidden, fashionista?

Posted by: ginger at July 26, 2008 1:36 PM

No worries,Felicia, it amuses me more than bugs me.
Good luck with the wide legs. Remember to go for wide leg and not flared. The flares are still slighly fitted in the hip and thigh and won't achieve the look you want. Also, be sure to keep the length reasonable. Too short and you look like you've joined the circus, too short you look sloppy. They back hem should just touch the bottom of your shoe.
I told you I was obsessed with pants. LOL!!
