QUESTIONS
When and why did you become a Roller Grrl?
About two years ago. There was a show on the A&E channel called “Roller Girls”, I used to watch it thinking how awesome it was and if there was a team here how I would totally do it. So when Jenn [SCRG's founder) approached me with her idea of starting a roller derby team here in Fresno, I was more than excited to do it!
What's the meaning behind your roller derby name?
I am quite the domestic type. I love cooking, baking, scrap-booking, and rock 'n' roll! So, I felt that a pun of Betty Crocker was very appropriate.
What are the most challenging and most rewarding parts of roller derby?
Derby is hard on your body, it’s 100% real and full contact. When you come off the track and everyone is coming up to you saying how much they loved it, it makes it all worth while.
What other sports do you/would you play?
As a teenager I played ice hockey, which definitely helped prep me for derby. Now, every weekend I go roller skating with my mom, which is who I get my skills from.
How do you skate so fast?
I am a really competitive person. When I’m out there I am totally driven by that little voice in my head saying “You're not going to let that girl beat you, you ARE going to be faster”! It sounds nuts, but you have to want it that bad.
People go nuts for you at bouts. Tell the truth: Does it really help?
Totally! When I’m out there completely exhausted and I feel like I can’t take one more stride, it’s the cheering that keeps me going, it helps drive me!
What's it like after bouts when people want your autograph?
I am so flattered by it. It’s crazy to me that people get so excited about something I just love to do. I LOVE that people love it.
A lot of people have called you one of Fresno's top sports stars. Your reaction?
That’s crazy to me! As much as I don’t think of myself in that light, it’s awesome to get that kind of recognition. I just do this because it’s fun!
What's your life like outside of roller derby?
I work with moms and babies as a registered nurse at a local hospital. When I’m not at work or practice, I’m spending time with my husband and two kids.
What kind of reaction do you get from people when they find out you're involved in roller derby?
People are usually surprised and say that they can’t picture me being mean. After the initial shock of my alter ego, they are excited and want to know when the next bout is.
Do you get recognized as "Betty Rocker" in your daily life?
It’s kind of weird when I’m walking through Wal-Mart and I hear someone say “When’s your next game”, or in the hallway at my hospital someone calls me “Betty”. I can’t believe how much this crazy idea to play roller derby has grown. I am just so thankful that people like what we’re doing and hope they keep coming to watch. Hope fully it will continue to grow and roller derby will become staple in Fresno lifestyle.
In your opinion, what's the best thing about one of your bouts?
No matter which way the score goes, it is guaranteed to be entertaining.
To what do you attribute the team's massive following?
Roller derby is a new and exciting thing for Fresno. I think the people of Fresno were ready for something amazing and different, so we’re giving it to them.
It seems like many of the Smog City girls have their own individual looks. What's your style?
For me fishnets go hand in hand with roller derby. I also like knee-high socks, it helps to keep the “retro” roller derby style going and I always like to have a painted-on black eye for the intimidation factor. But my signature look is my sparkle skates.
What's the worst injury you've gotten in roller derby?
My nose got broken at practice. I had a head on collision with a teammate that left me with scar across my nose and a REAL black eye.
Who talks the best smack on the team?
Lola La Chola without a doubt! I love her, she just tells it like it is.
Do you have male roller derby groupies?
Yeah, the guys like it just as much as the girls. For girls I think it’s the idea of empowering women. For guys I think it’s about girls kicking other girl’s butts!
Do you find yourself throwing elbows in line at Starbucks sometimes?
I think as a roller girl you find yourself always ready to take a hit. So, it’s like second nature to bend your knees and take a wide stance when people get too close to you. I have to stop and think, wait, I can’t pummel this person right now.

I have known Betty Rocker since birth, always determined on and off the skates, blades, skateboards, snowboard whatever she chooses. We are very proud of her. She is a great skater and a positive role model. If you want to know where she got those skills you should see her mom Kellie Bruun skate, she is an animal. Don't forget to paint your face black and pink tomorrow, sport those smog city colors. See you there, Patty Smith (aunt of Betty Rocker) the one running around the rink with the signs.
