Ice-T vs. Soulja Boy: The chronicles of ridiculousness
Last week, rapper/actor Ice T dissed dancer/kinda-rapper/YouTuber Soulja Boy, saying he of "Crank Dat" fame "single-handedly killed hip-hop" and instructed Mr. Boy to "eat a [piece of the male genitalia]." Behold:
Warning: Every video in this post is NSFW.
Riveting stuff, right? So, of course, Soulja Boy retorted with seven minutes of YouTube, pointing that Ice T is old, plays a copy on TV and should be happy that young boys like Soulja are making money of hip-hop. Or, in other words, yaaahhh, trick, yaaahh!
Today, comes this reply from Ice T, in which he starts off by apologizing, but continues to threaten Soulja Boy. He offers up a "respect your elders" speech and even enlists his son to stick up for him.
Three rounds in, here's how I see things ...
THE SCOREBOARD
+1 Soulja Boy -- For Ice T mentioning Das EFX in between Rakim and Big Daddy Kane. Das EFX? Legends? Chiggity, check yourself there, Detective Fin.
+1 Ice T -- Soulja Boy is hot garbage.
+1 Soulja Boy -- "I'll let you fight my granddaddy."
+1 Soulja Boy -- For seeing this for exactly what it is: "You gettin' ready to drop an album, that's why you mentioned my name."
+ 1 Ice T -- Soulja Boy has two little peons who he dresses the same. Kris Kross'll make ya jump, jump!
+1 Ice T -- Soulja Boy doesn't seem to know the difference between N.W.A.'s "F*** The Police" and Ice T/Body Count's "Cop Killer."
+1 Soulja Boy -- At 4:25 -- "Think about it in my shoes, man." Then he follows with a rather on-point monologue about how Ice-T shouldn't be mad him for being successful.
+1 Soulja Boy -- Ice T rockin' a ridiculous Iverson jersey that you could probably get for $7.99 at Ross.
+1 Ice T -- Apologizing, then saying, "As far as your music goes, it's garbage."
+1 Ice T -- "I got cake for every year I've been alive. You've got 15 minutes."
+1 Soulja Boy -- "Watch the YouTubes," says Ice T, busting out the old-man speak.
+1 Soulja Boy -- Ice T's kid showing up at the end talking smack.
You could tally that up and make the case that Soulja Boy won, but in fact, this is an EPIC FAIL on both sides. Really, we all lose when rappers talk trash to each over via YouTube.
THE UPSHOT
Here's the best part of this whole beef to me:

Comments:
i saw this yesterday and wondered when mike oz would give his take. and here it is. super nice break down and point total.
i think soulja boy should have definitely gotten a point deduction because he was clearly reading some notes. how wack of rapper are you when you can't even go off on someone for five minutes without notes. wackness.
and that upshot video is priceless.
but let's all remember that soulja boys music sucks, and will have less impact on music than 'who let the dogs out'. whereas ice t's music caused congress to weigh in on lyrical content and free speech.

I'd be embarrassed for both of them, but I can't be bothered to give a s**t.
Props to Mike Oz for doing a post that's infinitely more entertaining than the subject matter.

I'm shaking my head in disbelief...
It's like watching a cartoon about cartoons,
and the cartoons are exaggerations about stuff that nobody wants to admit being wrong,
--yet has made a ton of money off of playing as 'authentic urban struggle...'
I mean, I just got punk'd,
and it was by a cartoon,
about two people who have turned the whole concept of creating music, insulting each other, apologizing, threatening each other, apologizing,
--and then making more money
---into a cartoon...
...wait, is this the 'southpark,' reality show?
I'm laughing and crying and snoring at the same time...
I feel like:
FINALLY ---something stupid enough from another culture to take the pressure off of WWF as the posterchild for '...waste of oxygen...'
(And yet? I have a creeping feeling that there's going to be real drive-by's over this with real bullets...)
-thanks Oz....
I'm going to go crawl into a crate somewhere and listen to nothing but Carpenters records from here on out...

Why is Ice T always so mad?
With a hot wife like CoCo shouldnt he have a permanent grin on his face? I mean, her tight pants alone are enough to make a guy smile.
And Mike, you gotta go to Kanye's blog and get his take on it....although he's a bad ass rapper and definately has earned that chip on his shoulder, he still manages to make himself look like a total MORON.

Oh, snap ... I forgot about Kanye's take. Yeah, I read that yesterday. Kanye's a fool for comparing Soulja Boy to Nas -- but he did really like Mase, so there's no accounting for Kanye's taste.

Too much in HATE in hip hop these days. Well there's always been hate but after so many years listening to rap music, I'm starting to get sick of it.
What is hip hop? Isn't it being who you are, dancing (originated from break dancing), speaking on whatever you want to speak on, style, am I missing anything else. Graffeti is another element if i'm not mistaken.
I don't listen to Soldier Boy. I can't tell you what the Superman is or what the name of his hit record was. I don't listen to pop rap or what is being given to the radio dj's by the executive powers that be at the music labels. However, this new movement that has so many old skool heads up in arms is hip hop right?
I mean, they are dancing, they have their own style, and they are rapping about what they want to rap about. I guess the influence these rich old executives have on the game is the problem. I guess we can say solider boy isn't being who he is because the rich executives told him to be who he is. Old skool heads feel these ringtone rappers are selling out for the money.
This is the millineum. We all sell out for the money. Ice T is a perfect example of this. He was rapping about killing cops and now he plays one on TV. How is that different than what Soldier Boy is doing? It's not really different. I guess the only difference is that these young kids getting into the game are making money right off the bat and don't have to really struggle???
People are no longer protesting rap these days, it is now accepted. Not being racist here, but white people hated rap, now it seems like they are the only ones buying it and supporting it. I walked out the mall the other day and this big hillbilly looking white guy was bumping 50 Cent. You read about 50 cent on blogs, and this guy is the most hated rapper out there. He's hated by his own people, haha. Crazy how times have changed huh?
Rap went from being hated by politicians and executives, to being accepted as another easy way to make money. The powers that be, tried to take down hip hop, but failed. now it's their cash cow. i don't buy into the whole Hip hop is dead thing that Nas tried to make money off of.
Hip hop is not dead. It will never die. There is plenty of good music out there if this pop rap do the dirty dance thing isn't your cup of tea. People want to hear a party track. That's what makes money. The demographic is all about having a good time. Us old skool heads need to let 1996 go. We are old now, our fun times are over, haha. Just kidding of course.

'...people used to protest rap, now it's accepted and mainstream...'
hmmmmm...
Okay, so we need a music form that really is on the edge, that can be used to really express feelings,
keep it real, causes movement,
---and be just enough a mystery that only the 'hip' will get it,
--and the rest be a combination of terrified, intimidated,
---AND bring on a ton of 'wanna-be's.'
(And it has to have geographical foundations in tough towns and be ethnocentric for that 'edge,'
---so that when it goes mainstream?
It makes everybody who is not 'one of them,' (whoever 'them' is at the moment,)
---looks dangerous, daring, out of place, and unsettlingly stupid.
(something that will scare the hell out of parents when they find recordings of it in their bedrooms
(make clergy nervous --some trying to record it and 'reclaim it for good,'
maybe do a gospel version...)
...hmmmmmmm,
got it!, oh yeah.
Polka...
Finally Jimmy Sturr and Weird Al get seen as the BadAss gangstas that they really are...
(Still, I dunno..
it's gonna be rough blend to market...
-a video of a guy wrestling his way out of a minivan with an accordian walking up to a camera saying
'...hello my niggahs's'
-bunch of people eating 'basa and 'kraut on paper plates with little plastic forks in the background flashing secret gang signs...?
may not translate...)
(Somebody get 'House of Pain,' on the line, see how they did it...)
but definitely
Polka.
--(hey, on a plus side? you don't have to go out and buy extra weapons... an accordion already is lethal in the right hands...)
-Now... what kind of domestic animals would 'Polka-Bangers' have (you know, for image, protection and illegal fighting...?)
-holsteins?
???
you could do this, Fresno.
This could be your ticket....

Nas supports Shaq's freestyle against Kobe. Oh wait, wrong beef.
Posted by: mdub420 at June 24, 2008 1:11 PM
I vowed to only write about one of these stupid rap beefs -- and it was Ice-T/Soulja Boy. The Shaq/Kobe thing is even more dumb.

Thanks Mike Oz that was much needed.
My favorite line by Ice-T:
"You can't hurt my career cuz, I'm caked out jack!"

Soulja boy is a new level of hip hop. We need to have something for the new generation to relate to because we didn’t grow up when Ice-t did. No disrespect to Ice-t or anything. I mean Soulja boy maybe a no Nas but he is new school. I think all this beef needs to stop between rappers. Can’t they just make money and do positive stuff for their co-rappers?
