arrow Blogger Olympics: Sounds like it'd be nerdy, and it totally is

With gold medals, silver beads and "Hello My Name is ... Third Place" stickers up for grabs, bloggers from around the Fresno Internets assembled last weekend for the inaugural Blogger Olympics. Held at various locations around town, this Olympiad was a chance for eight local bloggers to try to best each other in mini golf, skee ball, arcade basketball, air hockey and Wii bowling.

Competitors included Mikey of The Fresnan, Ed of estewartartist, Roque of The Dumb Are Mostly Intrigued by the Drum, Adam of Gustav's Groupie, Famous Whitewater of Fresno Famous (arriving near the end) and The Beehive's Mike Oz, Heather and Will.

After a full day of competition, not as much trash talk as you might expect, and some pizza, the final trophies went to Roque (third), Mike Oz (second) and the ultimate Blogger/Olympian, H-Mac.

Here with commentary is The Beehive's trio of Blogger Olympians:

Heather: It was a remarkable day - the kind of day during which heroes are made. Eight titans came together from the four corners of Fresno in a test of strength and skills to determine ultimate supremacy. The day proved to be one that would challenge our spirits but ultimately forge the strongest of bonds between competitors. Wait - am I remembering it wrong? I got a lot of sun that day. Blackbeard's should plant more trees or something on its pirate golf course.

Mike: Geez, just 'cuz a girl wins a couple of gold medals, she think she's writing the Iliad or something. Yes, Blogger Olympics was as awesome and as geeky as it was when I dreamt it up months ago. Yeah, that's right. It was my idea. I think that's worth enough points to vault me from second to first place. Right?

Will: No. Mike, Heather beat us bad, dude. We're not gonna have some kind of superdelegate situation up in here to declare a nonwinner a winner. What? Too political? Too soon?

Mike: No, no. Heather won. I concede. I endorse her as the queen blogger.

Heather: Well, I wasn't going to mention it, since the Blogger Olympics is supposed to be about bloggeraderie (blogging + camaraderie), but yes, there was a winner. And yes that winner was the only female in a group of rough and rugged men. This should come as no surprise to anyone reading this, however, because women are better at most things. Moving on, I think we should assign some other awards, like: Most Inappropriate Footwear (both in the Olympics and in life): Will Albritton, Crocs-wearer.

Will: I wanted to go full-out sporty guy, complete with headband, but it was hot, and Crocs are comfortable. I'm a blogger; think I care about fashion?

Mike: Or winning?

Will: I'm ... not ... very good ... at things. I'm not even that good at blogging. But I have fun, Mike. Go on, knock that. And Blogger Olympics was fun. So, er, thanks. I liked the fact that we got off our butts and enjoyed some of the things we blog about. I hadn't met Adam, Roque or Ed before Saturday, and Ed and I were both in the Rogue festival. At some point, we should have run into each other. I think it speaks to how we sometimes blog in a vacuum, and people these days stick to themselves and their own groups. Like the Olympics, it was like we were different nations coming together for a common purpose: to get our asses handed to us by Heather.

Heather: Word up to everything you just said (especially that last part). I hope we do this again next year, and make it bigger, better and more Fresno-ier.

Mike: Yeah! How about a Blogger Olympics sponsorship, Me-n-Ed's? And you other bloggers out there, start practicing, cuz it's all mine in '09.

Ohhhhh, so that's what a professional video and post looks like. Dooley noted.

At least the one athletic thing I did that day got caught on tape: hoping the fence for my ball.

Seriously?

You all got moded by a girl??

And who picked these rigorous 'events??'

Listen, I compete each year in a REAL competition. The Roblee Sports Safari. Where the top three of each event has to do a shot. The opening drinkemonies start at 8am. Nobody really finishes (sober), and the head scorekeeper can't keep score after 6 or so events.

But I digress. Let me get back to the more salient point: You all got beat by a GIRL!!! Who seemed QUITE proud to hoist the trophy marked 1976 or some such.

Seems like a fun day. Next time at least invite Felicia so you boys can get tromped by TWO girls. Will? Nice jersey. I'm sure Tampa Bay is really proud you represented them into last place. Also nice to see Josh ONLY featured couch-potato-ing.

Last thought, MikeOz? Two words for next year: Cheer. Leaders.

A few things:

- We did invite other girls. The Fresnocentric ladies. They couldn't make it, though.

- It was a 1979 trophy -- purchased for like $1.65 at the D.A.V.

- We had a couple quasi cheerleaders around (wives, friends, etc), but I am down with uniformed cheerleaders. Maybe we can get the Coyotes cheerleaders or something.

Nice...very nice. Once again a great victory for a McLane kid. As always, one of them does a mother proud. I'm excitied about next year. Maybe it will be announced in time for more cheerers to attend.
