arrow Senior cinema might just continue

The announcement Harrison Ford would reprise his role as Indiana Jones was greeted with some doubts. Could the 65-year-old actor handle the physical demands of playing the adventurer? Would the action have to be less exciting so Indy would not break a hip?

If you were one of those asking the questions, go see “Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull.” It opens today. What you will see is Ford’s performance has not lost a step. And it has been 19 years since he played the character. Indy is just as wise cracking, fist throwing and chance taking as ever.

His return along with Sylvester Stallone’s recent decision to make new “Rocky” and “Rambo” movies suggests a trend of aging action actors reprising their famous roles just one more time.

What’s next?

Maybe Clint Eastwood will agree to make one more “Dirty Harry” movie. The growling cop could be called back for one more assignment. Imagine the dialogue. Eastwood would stare into the eyes of a nervous thug and say, “This here is a 357 walker. It is the toughest walker used by senior citizens. I know what you are thinking. Can he take eight steps or only seven? Do you feel lucky punk? Do you?”

Robert De Niro might take another turn as Travis Bickle from the 1976 movie “Taxi Diver.” Don’t worry about how he returns. Hollywood can make even the impossible happen. Just imagine the scene where De Niro asks “You talking to me? You talking to Me!? No. I really mean it. Are you talking to me? My hearing aid batteries are shot.”

Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger could reprise his role as the Terminator. The cyborg ends up being sent back in time to correct California’s budget problems. He even can use a variation on his famous line when he says “I hurt my baaack.”

Imagine if Mel Gibson did one more Mad Max movie. He would play a guy living in a world of war and violence where gasoline is a premium commodity. He ends up in a huge battles with the law. No wait. That would be a documentary.
